Guest Victor von Zeppelin Posted February 23, 2012 Report Posted February 23, 2012 For those of you interested in the technology which could potentially underpin your next phone, take a look at a recent test of the Qualcomm MSM8960 MDP over at Anandtech. The article outlines some of the improvements afforded by Qualcomm’s new design, known as Krait. The CPU tested was running at 1.5GHz on a 28nm process. The device also carried 1 GB of dual channel RAM and a 1024x600 screen (at 4 inch… that’s 296 DPI. Would be interesting if a production device came out with that screen…) The most obvious gain is in pure speed was in Linpack where we were seeing about double the speed of the already speedy Galaxy S 2. Numbers in other tests weren’t so extreme, but higher on all accounts. For example, we saw a SunSpider score of 1532 on the MSM8960, vs. 2097 on a Galaxy Nexus. As for graphics, the 8960 features the Adreno 225 GPU, a souped up version of the Adreno 220 from Qualcomm’s line up last year. While not a generational leap like the CPU performance, the 225 matches and sometimes beats the PowerVR SGX 543MP2 employed in the iPhone 4s and iPad 2- previously the fastest GPU on the market. Qualcomm have stated that further Krait designs would sport the Adreno 300 GPU, which will be significantly faster. Take a look at the full benchmarks over at Anandtech.
