First came OnLive Gaming, then in January this year OnLive Desktop arrived. At launch it was only released for the Apple iPad, but now they have released an Android version.

OnLive Desktop gives to access to a virtually hosted Windows 7 desktop installed with Microsoft Office. You get full application functionality as well as the ability to sync with the OnLive file storage service. With the free plan you get 2GB storage, however if you are willing to part with $5 per month then you get web access too. This will allow you to use your Dropbox account to store your files. If you are willing to spend a little more, you can get the Pro version which gives you 50GB cloud storage and the ability to install your own applications.

The current version is limited to the US market only, however the APK is linked below if you feel like trying it out. If you are already registered with OnLive in the UK you will also need to create a new user account.

Once installed and started the application will ask you to sign in, you should then see the Windows desktop. If you are used to Windows then everything will be familiar to you. You will have Microsoft Office installed and ready to go, as well as Adobe X reader. The Microsoft Surface Touch Pack is also included, showing off some of the touch capabilities of the platform.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that you can play music and watch video on the Windows side and the output on my Transformer was very good - audio was clear and as good as anything I have played locally. There is a little lag on screen refreshes but this is to be expected as I am connecting to the US server farm, along with everyone else trying out this new service.

The OnLive Desktop app has been tested for compatiblity with the Acer Iconia Tab A500, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola XOOM, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1, and HTC Jetstream, but it may well work on other devices. Let us know in the comments if you get it working on other tablets or phones. It will also be coming to PC, Mac, and Televisions, either directly on a connected TV, or via the OnLive MicroConsole

Unfortunately it claims that my Galaxy Tab 7 (note that number!) does not have at least a 7inch screen.

Ah well.

I can't use it here in germany, how did get it working in the uk?

I tried it over the vpn of privateinternaccess which gave me a US based ip, but it won't work - it always says network problems - any ideas?

I just installed the apk in the article, then went and signed up on their site. If you are getting network issues it may be the connection to the US. I didn't need VPN
