Phone cannot send SMS but sim works in other phone

bit of a strange one

just got wifes xperia X8 back from O2 repair for a faulty camera, but now it can't send text messages. it can receive them though.

if i put her virgin sim card in my S2 i can send text messages. if i put my virgin sim card in her X8 she can send messages, but the combination of her phone and her sim card doesn't work

any suggestions? apart from sending it back for repair!
