volume buttons unusable - need your advice

Hi all.

not long ago I replaced the ear piece speaker and in the process, ripped the volume laser cables. this made the volume keys unusable.

I then lost all hope for future modding of the Blade, since I can't use the recovery without them. but lately I've decided to try and flash apk's using Rom Manager - which was successful.

I've recently read about the CWM GUI (series 4) for the blade which could be a solution, and so:

1. was there something wrong with version 4 of ClockworkMod? in Rom Manager, when selecting "Manual Flash Override", I'm presented only with verison 2 and 3.

1. since ICS is coming close in the near future, I'll need a bigger system partition = TPT. can it be done without the volume key?

2. booting recovery without a volume key - is it only possible with adb? what if I bootloop (or stuck at green android) and adb won't be able to connect? wouldn't I be able to open the recovery without volume keys?

I'd like to have your advice about DOs & DON'Ts of flashing without volume keys.
