# 33. Some Metrology Connections

Part of the fun of ancient metrology is trying to work out the connections between various units. Jim Alison and David Kenworthy have been doing great work in this regard recently. And Derek Skhane's work is all about the interconnectedness of numbers in relation to metrology.

Here are a few images I've put together, inspired by their work, to try and visualise some connections that interest me.

This first one is about the geometry connections that link up some units of measure. In particular I'm interested in units derived from a 25,920 inch or metre great unit.

This shows the clear link between the Royal Egyptian Cubit (either the Michell / Neal one, or the Berriman one) in relation to the ancient metre of 39.375". It's plausible that these cubits derive from the metre. I've been interested to find many links to this ancient metre in fact, and sometimes to a digit of 0.7875" which is 2 mm.

This shows the number connections between several main units such as the various Egyptian cubits and the digit of 0.7291666667".

In the following two images, I try to show simple connections between several units and two great units, one of 25,920 inches, and the other of 25,920 metres. It's possible that units were derived from these great units.

Here I'm experimenting with a 2.7216 foot Megalithic Yard (MY), to try and find connections between a value close to Thom's original MY and the 0.7291666667" digit, as well as other units. David Kenworthy has just done a great __video presentation__ on this.

David Kenworthy has done great work on developing the idea of a base 100 and a base 99 system. And the number 99 does come up an awful lot, so here are some connections I like.

Here I look into the possible values of the diameter to a circle with a circumference of 24.883 metres. 24.883 = 12 x 12 x 12 x 12 x 12 / 10,000.

This is just an image I came across and thought was interesting because of the numbers 22 and 7, which combine to make an approximation on pi.

And this one is about the number 96. In particular I was looking at a 25,000 unit circumference of the Earth, as the polar circumference in miles is 25,000 x 175/176 miles. 175/176 links up two approximations of pi: 22/7 and 25/8.

Here I am looking at a possible 2.7216 foot Megalithic Yard as 1 micron / micrometre x 12 x 12 x 12 x 12 x 4, or x 9 x 16 x 9 x 16 x 4. The micron is suited to express the size of things such as bacteria.
