[POLL] Choosing a ROM

Hi guys,

INTRO: I have been trying CM9 new mod for the past weekend but I'm discovering I'm not very happy with it. Can't get voice recognition, no gallery, got some serious slowdowns and crashes, no flash support and ugly-ass bad quality gradient background inside definitions menu (and other places in the UI). I also think battery life isn't that good, but I'm unsure since the phone is new and I've been charging it very randomly and doing a lot of time consuming tasks (I'm messing with the phone all the time).

I just want to choose a stable ROM with Android's stock features working correctly, that is graphically the closest possible to ICS and that can give me the best battery life without slowdowns (at least in the menus).

I use A LOT wi-fi. I'm always messing with facebook, trillian, browser, etc...

I'm unsure about Skatie, Atomic and Logicmod, so your oppinion would be welcome, and of course, suggest any other if you think it's more suited to these needs.

Thanks!

EDIT: added SwedishSnow on 26.03.2012 @ 14:16GMT. Poll results at that time were:

Skatie: 0 votes

LogicMod: 8 votes

1) AtomicMod if you want a taste of ICS because it is themed to look like it (Android 2.3.5)

http://android.modac...e-21-03-12-new/

2) LogicMod if you don't mind it's Android 2.3.4 - but has Dolby Mobile and Signal Boost (this is also available as a separate Addon that works on other ROMs, too)

http://android.modac...te-r3-22-03-12/

3) SKatie - conservative with default Android 2.3.5 Look&Feel, online update kitchen with possibility to install own APKs within system partition, Dolby Mobile integrated - still in development mode but working (turnin on/off in settings doesn't work this makes dolby active all the time)

http://android.modac...-now-available/

4) Ice Armor III which is CM7 (Android 2.3.7). In case you want to use all of those rich CyanogenMod features. Stability is OK as well as battery life but some (including me) reported some problems with compass and GPS.

5) Swedish Snow - ported from ZTE Blade, very good stability and performance - Android 2.3.5

Regarding battery life, I think all of ROMs are quite similar with it. You cannot expect miracles under heavy use, though.

You better try them all yourself to gather your personal pros and cons and decide for one that suits you best :)

These are the most used ones. Anybody feel free to add the other ones I omitted.

Shouldn't logic be worse since it's 2.3.4? I would also like to know more about custom kernels. This atomic came with one but looks like there are some better apps for managing cpu, like set cpu...

Well, I had a opportunity to compare Android 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 on decompiled level when I was porting dolby and signal boost from it.

And I can tell you there is really a small number of changes between 2.3.4 and 2.3.5.

Maybe like 80%-90% of the 2.3.5 is exactly the same as 2.3.4...

Regarding CPU - it really doesn't matter what app you use to control CPU frequencies because they all work depending on what kernel you have and

what frequencies, governors and IO schedulers it supports.

Most of ROMs have several kernels you can choose from.

Well, I think 10%-20% of code is more than enough to make battery saving changes. It really depends if you are improving on the efficiency your programming skills or if you are just cutting in reduntant and inneficient hardware usage and monitoring. I would say that changing 10%-20% of code and only moving x.x.1 seems like too much work for so little milleage :)

What I have for CPU now I don't know how it's called but came built-in with the logicmod and has very little costumization options.

I am running stock kernel as it seems, but I beleive I flashed one in the pack. Any clue on where/how to change it? Does it improve OS efficiency or only booting speed?

Cheers!

Well, changes from 2.3.4 - 2.3.5 wouldn't affect battery life significantly. Of course, even if it depends on if system components (services and apps, etc) are designed battery-wise. I believe kernel is the one that takes the main role regarding battery life. It really is not about booting speed.

SwedishSnowR6, but i can't see...

Looks like this had a lot of work... interesting... What kind of battery life do you get with this release?

@C3C0 - thanks for the input :)

No problem! Can you give specific info about type of usage and battery type on each ROM?

BTW, Sw. Snow is using the same kernel as Skatie (Ceco S2 configured and built by me).

And have 2wcr also.?

Skatie does not have 2wcr enabled. But probably could be easy to do so.

I'll upload screenshots later, from battery stats, but until this day it was perfect for me..

For me the 2wcr is the most most important, i talking dozen of liars.. :-) who denial the stars from the sky :-)

im sure all roms have 2 way call recording except cm7, logicmod definitely has it because i recorded a conversation with orange a while back.

press the menu button when in a call then select record

Tillaz, can you give your input on wich of your roms has the best battery? I installed logic last night and the battery realy managed to spend only 1% in 4h without wireless, gps, etc with the phone blocked the entire time, but when I turned on the screen it started consuming baterry a bit fast (almost instantaneous to 95% and lower).

I don't seem to be able to open an avi MPEG4 video in logic, any idea about that? (sorry for OT)

I am also very open to suggestions regarding governator configurations, and how to change to the kernels I installed.

I haven't tried any yet but I just recommend ICS CM9, because I've been using a phone with ICS and it is more beatiful and has apps made just for it and well It's ICS!! But if u wanna wait till all the problems are fixed, I will choose CM7 ;)

I can confirm this. It works, at least for skatie. I knew recording option is there but I thought it was just one way. And it really is two way...
