Brand new ZTE Blade OLED, where to start?

Hi,

I just bought an unused and brandnew ZTE Blade with an OLED screen from ebay! (80 euros) It still has the original Orange Android 2.1 version on it :(

It would be very nice of someone to tell me how to start when installing custom roms and rooting, as I have never done it before.. I want to be very careful and do all the backups that are necessary but Im really overwhelmed with all the tutorials I find on the net and I dont know which ones are latest.. Is rooting even required to install custom roms?

Also, which ROM would you guys recommend? I once had a ZTE Blade OLED a year ago or so, and it had Clockwordmod and froyo jellyfish preinstalled.. I see alot of people writing about cyanogenmod, which version is the latest? I even heard of ICS roms for the blade..

Thanks in advance and sorry for asking so much, just want to be sure I dont brick my ZTE Blade by flashing it wrong or making no backups (which I have no clue how to do)

This link should get you started its very well written, easy to follow and can all be done without the need for a p.c. If you are using a non orange sim you might want to unlock you device first. Very easy and free. Just Google it or there is a app on Google Play called ( unlock ZTE blade) just pop your IMEI number in and it should give you the unlock code.

As for choosing a rom, that's a lot harder as there are so many good ones about and more being released. I personaly like my roms close to stock so I use Swedish Snow rls6, but if you like lots of different settings and another good rom you may like cyanogenMod roms, also the Dian Xin roms are looking good but with DianXin you will have to play with the settings so better to wait until you have a bit more play time with you're new phone. Well hope this helps.

are you sure I need to unlock it ???

I thought changing the ROM is enough?

Its been a long time since I rooted my phone e.t.c. But I am quite sure a custom rom doesn't unlock your phone. It costs nothing to unlock your phone and you can still use a orange sim. So you might as well do it. Anyone reading this might be able to jog my memory about a rom unlocking your phone. Things might be different since I unlocked mine.

Yep, all the custom ROMS on here also unlock your phone.

Cheers Geoff2 for the update. Sure it was different 6 or so months ago. But as I unlocked my phone before installing a rom I wasn't sure.

You can also unlock your phone using this free online calculator, just enter the phone's IMEI code, select ZTE next to Service then ZTE Blade Android next to Models... enjoy!
