Non-functioning touch screen after flash

I bought a T-Mobile Pulse from a friend, after he'd attempted to upgrade the version of Android on it, and failed. (some while ago, then put it in a drawer until it came up 8in conversation and I generously offered to buy it!) The phone had (apparently) already been unlocked. I've no idea what version of Android he was trying to upgrade from... or to. When turned on, the screen displays gibberish for a few seconds, then stabilises and displays the word "Android".. then "T-Mobile", then the time and date and "flick upwards to unlock", thereafter the touch screen fails to function. although the trackball continues to function as do the home and back buttons. (So, no, trying to flick the button upwards as suggested does nothing at all) Pressing the "Menu" button brings up "tap here to have your favourite people to appear on the homescreen". As it is, the phone is clearly unuseable. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. It's a nice phone - my friend assures me that (before he started fiddling with it!) it worked perfectly. I'd like to restore it to working condition!

Looking elsewhere for a solution, I found someone else has the same problem - and their post shows a photograph of the "Gibberish" screen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444455
Great minds obviously think alike... although I'd rather been put off by the screenfull of gibberish (rather like an old analogue TV when the vertiicalhold was totally wrong) I downloaded the file (from here) copied it to a spare 2 Gig TF card, restarted the phone... and THIS time, rather than the Gibberish, I got an "I'm upgrading" screen. Phone is now as right as ninepence. Panic over!
