Monte Carlo touchscreen problems

The touchscreen on my Monte Carlo is behaving strangely. It has started detecting touches when my finger is nowhere near it. I think the problem is at the top right of the screen because I have the Messages icon at the top right, and when the screen starts misbehaving it spontaneously opens the Messages app.

The phone has been flashed with a Skate stock ROM, but it's been working fine for months so I don't think the ROM is to blame. The screen only started misbehaving yesterday, and I can't think of anything that might have caused it e.g. the phone hasn't been dropped. Power cycling the phone fixes the problem temporarily, but it soon comes back. Sometimes polishing the screen with a soft cloth temporarily fixes the problem, but the screen looks very clean to me; I can't see any dirt or grease on it.

If anyone can suggest a fix I'd be very grateful. I can't return the phone to Orange because I've flashed it.

Just flash back wit a stock tpt and return it. Sounds like a hardware issue.
