Guest domenico lamberti Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 pretty much the title, some dudes have managed to port android to C#, and early reports are saying it runs much smoother and better than on java, funny eh that something runs better on something ither than what it was originally written for lol, i dont know how easy it would be getting it to work on the crescent, if possible at all, just think it would be pretty cool to have android running on C# , github is below https://github.com/xamarin/XobotOS

I'm gonna toy with this.
Guest domenico lamberti Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 go for it mate, just thought it'd hrlp you guys, i think this all started as a way to bypass Oracle if google lost the battle in court, but it seems they might not lose now, but anyhow this is a cool project never the less
Guest BLu3HaZe Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Had any free time to check this out Daz? :) Always preferred C languages over Java, interested to see how this turns out
Guest Dazzozo Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 All the underlying hardware code in Android is unchanged in XobotOS so there shouldn't be any problems regarding hardware support. If you really want an OS you can't install any apps on, then I can look in to this further. :P
Guest misodoctakleidist Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 (edited) Does this mean current apps won't work, or does it still include a virtual machine? Edit: posted before Dazzozo. Edited May 17, 2012 by misodoctakleidist
Guest Dazzozo Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 It has a different virtual machine that just seems to prove to Google that Dalvik isn't great.
Guest misodoctakleidist Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Ah. I think I get it now. They have replaced Dalvik with a C# VM.
Guest Dazzozo Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Ah. I think I get it now. They have replaced Dalvik with a C# VM. Yep. The benefits aren't in using C# (other than lol legal aspects), they are in having a better VM than Dalvik. A new/improved VM could also be done in Java.
Guest BLu3HaZe Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Aha, so basically it'd end as a barebone OS without even any system apps running on it? Like Launchers etc. cuz they're also written in Java for the Dalvik VM? I know not much in programming languages, so excuse MT ignorance, but will it be possible to port the apps to C# without an unacceptable amount of effort? Improvements to the current VM would be great indeed, I feel these devices have potential to be faster than they are now. PS - If its not too much to ask Daz, again some pointers in getting this working may help me learning more? TY in advance!
Guest Dazzozo Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 At the moment it wouldn't even have a launcher. Xamarin themselves have said they're done with it, so it'll be a fork if anything that picks it up. They have their modified version of Sharpen that they used to port the OS, and I guess this can be used for apps too.
Guest domenico lamberti Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 does this mean that its not worth even trying to port it then? i mean ,it would be cool as a test ROM i guess if sharpen cant make all apps run
