Looking for a good value tablet? How about one of these Samsungs?

It's easy to feel a little hard-done-by in the UK because we don't get the Kindle Fire. The $199 powerhouse (sort of, it's dual core you know) is a great budget tablet for those over the pond but here in the UK Samsung don't want you to feel ENTIRELY left out.

Coming in at £199 (OK, so it's not $199, but it's probably 'our equivalent') is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0.

The device, which is shipping now from Carphone Warehouse in silver (white is currently out of stock), shares the same form factor as the Fire with its 7" screen. It shares the same internal storage as the Fire, 8GB. Like the Fire, it has a dual core processor that moves things along nicely... but the extra cash does get you some nice additional features.

Unlike the Fire, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 includes - aside from a silly name - Bluetooth, microSD expansion, dual cameras, a power button that's not stupidly placed on the bottom and the 'pièce de résistance'... Android Ice Cream Sandwich rather than Amazon's butchered, erm, er, I mean 'tweaked' Gingerbread. That means you get the Play Store out of the box as well as the other Google experience apps.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 isn't the only Samsung 7" tablet coming in at under £200. Expansys are also offering its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus 16GB for £199. In reality the devices seem to be pretty similar internally (although the Plus has 16GB of internal storage), however the Plus doesn't yet include Ice Cream Sandwich, instead shipping with Honeycomb. My advice? Buy version 2.0.

We have a unit on the way and will have a review online soon... but let us know if you've picked one up!

Mine came this week.

It: Already has Cyanogenmod 9 and AOKP available.

It is a nice tablet. Not too heavy ( compared to my HTC flyer)

Pretty quick and easy to root :)

Does anyone know if either have USB on-the-go, or host mode, or whatever it's called? (i.e can you plug in a USB pen drive, or an adaptor to plug in an SD card etc?)

I'm really tempted, I don't have an Android tablet (I tried the Advent Vega but it didn't compare well to my iPad 1) and Paul's recommendations are usually spot on. So what is stopping me? Well the fact that you can pick up a refurbished iPad 1 for £219. It would be nice to have something I could fill with films for the kids on long journeys but the 7 inch screen isn't ideal for that.

The. First one has much better specs. In at least two useful ways I looked into this. Even if a third party rom is needed should be easy to get right
