Guest hecatae Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Sony have today announced a new Xperia smartphone that is the spiritual successor to the low-end X8. Focusing on durability, the new Xperia Go meets industry standard IP ratings and lines up against the recently reduced Defy Mini. Yet another new Sony device... they do seem to be knocking them out at the moment! The specifications are mixed. First, the good points... 3.5” Reality Display powered by Mobile BRAVIA Engine gives razor sharp clarity 5MP fast capture camera goes from sleep to snap in just over a second Scratch resistant mineral glass display with wet finger tracking Highest level of dust and water resistance in a smartphone – IP67 Rating1Ghz dual core processor gives consumers super fast performanceInternal phone storage: 8 GB (up to 4 GB user-accessible memory)RAM 512 MBExpansion slot: microSD™, up to 32 GB50GB free cloud storage (BOX offer, to 31 December 2012)Size: 111 x 60.3 x 9.8 mmWeight: 110 grams And, inevitably, the bad news... Launching on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), upgradeable to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)480 x 320 pixels HVGA displayBuilt in. 1305 mAh typical, 1265 mAh minimum So, lots of good points (i'm particularly impressed by the wet finger tracking!) and a few bad. I'm surprised to see a HVGA display on this device, it's not as bad as a few QVGA devices I could mention, but historically Sony's low end phones have had a decent resolution (the Xperia U for example), so it's a little disappointing. It will be interesting to see the price point for the Go. It betters the Defy Mini in some regards (especially the dual core CPU), however with the Motorola now selling for £79, it's a tough market out there. [Via: Sony] Click here to view the item
