Hi guys,

I initially posted the following a few weeks ago in the Absolute Beginners section. The post has received well over 100 views but no replies. Perhaps I was being over cautious with where I initially posted it? Anyway, here is the original post... any advice would be gratefully appreciated :D ...

"Can you please help me with advise or point me in the right direction?

About 8 months ago, I bought my brand new rooted Gen 1 Orange San Franciscoinstalled with Swedish Spring from eBay. It worked perfectly fine for a few weeks, then I found that the individual contact ringtones that I had set up stopped working & the phone automatically used the default ringtone. This didn't really bother me, I took it as just a small niggle for such an amazingly feature rich cheap mobile. Then four or five months ago, intermittently, it started soft resetting when I was viewing images in the Album. Then it started resetting when I viewed images online, these resets became increasingly frequent, to the point where I was expecting a reset everytime I viewed an image. Then recently, it started resetting with no real pattern, it could be when I was setting a reminder or entering a note.

I did a bit of research to see if anybody had the same problem & if there was a solution, but to no avail. Being an IT Consultant & therefore presuming it would not be a difficult task, I decided that it was time to re-flash the ROM, so I spent two days backing up everything to my SD Card manually, as I don't trust automatic procedures when all of what I do is stored on the phone. My first problem was that I could not find a working link for Swedish Spring, or any working links for highly recommended ROMs for Gen 1 models for that matter. So, the friend who recommended the phone & who also had successfully installed ROMs to a number of Gen 1 San Francisco's, gave me the ROM he used, which was Japanese Jellyfish RLS9.

Never having carried out the procedure before my friend suggested that in part, I use this tutorial:

http://sanfranciscoa...e-libra-u-v880/

Upon completion of this tutorial I got an Android logo filling the screen. I waited for about forty minutes before deciding that it was a failed install, so removed & reinserted the battery & rebooted. Now, pressing the power button always shows the Android logo filling the screen with no change. Incidentally, I can get into ClockworkMod recovery.

In desperation I have spoken to these guys:

http://www.buzz-box....r/San_Francisco

who have told me that the phone is recoverable but they need all the details of the original rooting procedure. I could try to contact the guy I bought the phone from & see if he will give me these details, but I'm loathe to spend money on a solution that I may be able to carry out myself.

I would greatly appreciate any help that you guys can give as regards getting my phone, which I rely on heavily, up and running again."

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried installing a different ROM on the phone?

Hi nibblemonkey, thanks for your reply, ;) Yes, I have tried installing a different ROM... Swedish Spring, which was originally installed; but to no avail, I still get the Android logo permanently filling the screen :(

are you able to TPT your phone to GEN2 and then flash a GEN2 ROM, for example CM7?

Guest android@sam

Download TPT from http://www.mediafire.com/?9civd2253kvct99 and extract the image.bin to the image folder at the root of the sdcard.remember 'image' folder should be at the root of sdcard.then power on the phone with MENU+VOL Up some green text will appear and will end with a error messege then it will boot into clockwork recovery and flash the desired rom.

Thankyou matcho13579 & android@sam for your responses ;) I don't recall coming across the term 'TPT'. I thought I had already 'converted' the phone to Gen 2, if that is what you mean by 'TPT', with the instructions contained within the tutorial that I have linked? Please correct me if I am wrong :) I haven't tried flashing with the CM7 ROM, would this be worth trying?

android@sam, I'll try your suggestion in a couple of days when I have some spare time & report back with the result :D

Thankyou both for your input!

Hi Guys ;)

I've tried to do what android@sam suggested, but when I go to copy the .bin file to the root diectory I hit a problem.

I use the volume & home buttons to highlight & select mounts and storage. A new device is recognised & drivers installed on my PC. But when I go to copy the .bin file to the phone by clicking on the removable disk that has appeared in My Computer, I get "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk."

Am I doing something wrong or missing a vital part of the process?

Thanks for your help ;)

Put the file on the SDcard before booting with power+volume up. Either use a card reader, or if it works, you could try to mount the SDcard from clockworkmod recovery by going to the mounts & storage menu and mounting USB storage. From my experience, this doesn't always work properly.

Basically, how it works is that power+volume up will initiate an automatic process that will completely wipe and re-partition the device (and some other things I do not fully understand). This procedure will only start if the information required to re-partition (such as the core firmware files, and some kind of partition table I believe) is present in the image folder, otherwise nothing will happen.

TehStalker, thankyou for your workaround! Very much appreciated, I should have thought of that myself... must have been having a brain freeze moment Lol

Well, I have done the TPT download & procedure that android@sam instructed, with the help of TehStalker'ssuggestion. ;)

When I power on the phone with MENU+VOL Up, I get green text appearing on the screen as android@sam said I would, like this:

Update from T-Flash card!

error!

error!

error!

error!

error!

error!

and then the next line displays the very top half of four characters that are impossible to distinguish & nothing else happens.

Also, I don't no whether this is relevant, but the 'Back' button is highlighted.

What can I do now guys?

You need the TPT GEN1 to GEN2 zip file to 'upgrade' the phone to GEN2.

Extract the zip to the root of your microSD card. You should then have a folder named 'image' on the microSD card with the update files inside this folder, NOT in the root of the microSD card. If the files are at the root of the SD then create a folder called image and move the files into this folder.

Copy the ROM that you wish to install to the microSD card also, ready to use after the TPT update.

Turn off the phone, remove battery for a few seconds, replace battery

Switch phone on holding power, vol+ and menu.

TPT update should start: small green text as before

When clockworkmod starts select the rom that you copied to the SD card earlier.

Note that on first boot of the new ROM it may take a few minutes to boot (always seems longer than it really is!)

You're nearly there so don't lose heart.

If you're going to use a CM7 ROM then the stable ones are more reliable and er..... stable!

Good luck.

BTW the back button being 'highlighted': if it's red it means the battery is being charged or is low. Charge your battery fully before doing any update..... common sense.

I've just been going through this process with a 'new' SF (had one at launch and now wanted a decent 2nd phone).

For me, the tutorial method worked fine, but as the OP's stuck on the Android screen it suggests the Gen1 to Gen2 update failed.

It might be worth re-downloading the Gen1 to Gen2 zip file from the tutorial in case it was corrupt then manually creating the folder structure as suggested above and extracting the zip file into it. Now proceed as apeman69 suggests.

I'd also suggest downloading the latest Cyanogenmod 7.2 ROM for the Blade plus if needed the Google Apps zip file.

One other thing- the Blade/SF remains powered on even with the battery removed if the USB cable is attached, so make sure to unplug the cables before rebooting.

Moldovan Mile-High-Mountain-Pie Work on all [GEN1-2-3] :)

Had you tryied it ?

If you can get into Clockworkmod, have you tried wiping everything (system, data, cache) and installing a newer ROM? Froyo ROMs aren't maintained for the Blade anymore as far as I know, you would be more likely to get help using a ROM like Moldovan Mile High Mountain Pie or CM7.

Any progress so far?

Hi guys, :D

Sorry I haven't responded with any updates since my last post. I have been rather ill with a number of serious reoccuring chest infections for a number of weeks & the heavy duty medication rendered me not being able to function on any intelligent level  I am still suffering with the effects of the medication & finding it quite hard to comprehend anything in-depth  Due to the above and obviously now wanting to complete the task of hopefully restoring my Blade to it's former glory in a timely manner, I would be eternally grateful if somebody would kindly deduce that I require being pointed in the direction of an idiots guide as to what has been suggested in the comments above.

Thankyou for your patience & any help that may be forthcoming. :)

Jon download this link if it does not work, on your p.c browser type Swedish snow rls7 tpt zip. Once you have successfully downloaded the zip file and whilst it is still on you're p.c double click on it to open it and you should see a file called "IMAGE" now take your sd card out of your phone and put it in a p.c /card reader. After that right click on that image file and then select copy find your sd card on your p.c and click on it. You should now see all your files on you're sd card , now right click again and select paste. The image file should now be visable on your sd card. Remove you're sd card and put it back in your phone then make sure you're phone is at least half charged. Now power on your phone whilst pressing the menu button also the volume up+ button and obviously the power button. You should now see some green text after that has finished I can not quiet remember if it boots straight into the rom or if you end up in cwm if the second option arises just press back button once and then select the reboot system option by pressing the home button. If all has gone well you should now be using Swedish snow and from there you can flash whatever you like.

Hope this helps and get well soon.:D

bladebuddy ... Thankyou so,so much for your idiot proof guide!!! :D And thankyou so much to the rest of you guys who posted with your helpful comments!!! :D I now have a ZTE Blade with an almost fully working Swedish Snow RLS7 ROM! I say almost because I don't have any sound, either ringtones or media, even though I believe I have set the sound options correctly  Any suggestions?

It could be a problem with you're phones speaker, or as I tried to dumb the guide down for you I missed out the part about checking the md sum of the file, in order to not complicate things to much.

The important thing is you're phone now works and you can return to Konsta's thread on Swedish snow rls7 and download the cwm version of the rom and not the tpt version.

Next to the download link will be the MD5 sum of the file looks something like this.

MD5:153235799000Fgh6ph

You get my point. Now if you download MD5 sum checker from Google play you can load that file when it is on your sd card and check that the numbers listed on the download link match the numbers on that app.

If both numbers match then full wipe data/factory/dalvik in cwm then re-flash the rom if there is still no sound then you no for sure your phone's broken. Looking at what's been happening before I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case, at least this way you no for sure.

Guest Jon1971

Yup, I get the idea ;)

Thanks again for your help, I'll check out Konsta's thread & try the CWM version. :D

bladebuddy... I downloaded the CWM Rom using the main download link & the mirror link, but neither of the md5 checksum values match the values mentioned with the links. :(

I have tried scanning forward on the thread to see if there has been an updated version posted, but keep getting a "Website currently unavailable" screen.

Could you post a link to the required files please? Sorry to be such a pain.

Not in a wifi or 3g area at the moment but will dropbox a link for a fully working version of the Swedish snow rls7 rom tomorrow, also you could always try KonstaT's new rom which is ICS based there is also a TPT version and It's a very good rom ,you would have to use the TPT method as your system partition size is not quite big enough for this rom.

http://www.mediafire.com/?xo48gggql67b5kd

Or search konstakang tpt zip.

That's the link , if the MD5 SUM matches , you flash it the same way I told you about before via the image method. After flashing the rom you will need to go back into cwm and flash the Google extras or gapps package here is the link for that

http://www.mediafire.com/?lgq5h4r12ca7n52

Or search ICS gapps zip/ download.

Alternatively download TPT helper app and download a TPT that has the 200mb system partition size one of the download tpt options with the app this same app also lets you download you're own customized partition size, a very good app indeed. And from there you can download pretty much any rom you want to try
