Guest PaulOBrien Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 We couldn't make it to I/O this year, but thanks to a very kind friend we have a Nexus 7 in our possession... so it's time to #askmodaco! The Nexus 7 is Google's first 'Nexus' branded foray into the tablet market, offering impressive specs at rock bottom prices (£159 8GB / £199 16GB and $199 8GB / $249 16GB). We'll be putting the device through it's paces over the coming days in preperation for our full MoDaCo review, but if you have any questions - ask away! :) You can learn more about the Nexus 7 at the Google product page, also head on over to our new Nexus 7 forum. Many thanks to mobile applications specialists LineTen for loaning us their Nexus 7 / Q. Guest Swampie Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Can you confirm whether it supports Bluetooth Low Energy?
Guest PaulOBrien Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Can you confirm whether it supports Bluetooth Low Energy? Not that I'm aware of, but I don't know a way to check this. :D P
Guest Dave Marchant Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 With no Flash in Android 4.1, is BBC iPlayer supported in any way on the Nexus 7? (Need to know as have ordered one for wife's birthday).
Guest razzmataz1478 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 What USB devices work? External storage support?
Guest Ma7moud Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Can you check if it supports USB On-the-go please, can it detect USB drives?
Guest dulpit Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Is the free credit tied to the Google Play store for UK? (I'm in Ireland). Does it run phone or tablet OS?
Guest kayceejayh Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Can you see what your daughter thinks of it? Thinking of getting one for my little one :)
Guest sipart Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Rumours (haven't seen any evidence) that once rooted it can support OTG (On The Go) external storage via a cable. Root instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1741395 (but I'm sure Paul already on top of this). So to repeat the question(s) is: After root (and possibly with extra software) does is support external storage via OTG cable? Cheers
Guest PaulOBrien Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 With no Flash in Android 4.1, is BBC iPlayer supported in any way on the Nexus 7? (Need to know as have ordered one for wife's birthday). You can instal Flash, it's just not supported! What USB devices work? External storage support? None AFAICT. Can you check if it supports USB On-the-go please, can it detect USB drives? It doesn't. Yet. I imagine ROM / kernel hacks will add this. Is the free credit tied to the Google Play store for UK? (I'm in Ireland). Does it run phone or tablet OS? The credit can be USED anywhere, but whether you'll get it, I don't know! It's a weird phone / tablet hybrid tbh! Can you see what your daughter thinks of it? Thinking of getting one for my little one :) She'd love it. :D P

Guest kayceejayh Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 How's the build quality? It's a very cheap tablet!
Guest keef319 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Is video out possible, for playing hi def video onto a big TV?
Guest PaulOBrien Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Can you confirm whether it supports Bluetooth Low Energy? Bluetooth 2.1 according to the box. How's the build quality? It's a very cheap tablet! Very good indeed! P
Guest Rocky7 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 At Google IO we kept seeing them using the Nexus 7 with a USB ethernet dongle as the WiFi was patchy with 6000 geeks there.
Guest Swampie Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Hmm, according to http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/29/3125396/google-nexus-7-review it had Bluetooth 4.0. Looks like they didn't read the box. ;)
Guest Rocky7 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Oh and I saw someone using a mouse / keyboard combo on the USB port too
Guest fishsticks Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Are the 'Project Butter' UI improvements noticeable? Thanks
Guest The Soup Thief Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Is video out possible, for playing hi def video onto a big TV? Yeah - I've read conflicting reports - initial suggestions that the micro-usb supported MHL which would (with an adaptor) drive a TV via HDMI, but there was something on the Verge (or somewhere) suggesting this wasn't so Any definitive word on this?
Guest Rocky7 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Are the 'Project Butter' UI improvements noticeable? Thanks I can answer this one ... YES YES YES. very very smooth.
Guest SteveEdson Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 Assuming I can cope with the reduced screen size, would you recommend swapping my WiFi Xoom for the Nexus 7?
Guest BatfinkUK1 Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 How do you find the quality of the screen? Pocketnow intimate it's "washed out/dull"
Guest rferrett Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 You know if I knew for sure that USB OTG would work with the NX7 so I could watch media off a USB stick I think I would buy one right away. Reading all the threads on XDA it seems know one knows for sure if it is going to be possible. Hopefully it is a software limitation that the scene will sort. Of course usually after a Nexus comes out the manufacturer releases an own brand version with slightly more features so wouldn't at all be surprised is Asus have a slightly more expensive version with micro sd and MHL out in the not too distant future.
Guest gwebb Posted July 3, 2012 Report Posted July 3, 2012 iFixit have done a teardown, and say that a micro USB to HDMI cable was included with their Nexus 7. http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus-7-Teardown/9623/1
