Hi All

As the title says, I upgraded a custom rom last night and post installation, found that £20 had been deducted from my Orange PAYG (leaving only 15p :( ). Having phoned Orange support they told me that 4 lots of £5 had been deducted (which was during the time I had been upgrading my phone). I can only think this could have occured whilst I was registering my account with Google Store (although this only usually takes a couple of mins). Once complete, I usually turn off all mobile data preferring to use free wifi instead. My question is:-

Should Orange refund this ammount? Even the guy I spoke to at Orange, said this looked suspicious given my "usual" usage of the phone but said that they wouldn't refund this ammount. If this had occured under their stock rom, I would have kicked up a fuss but given it was a custom rom (not supported by Orange), I'm not sure where I stand :/.

Unfortunately for you orange have every right to charge you that for your data usage. See their website here http://help.orange.c...rsonal/484373/2

Sure but £20 for what was a couple of minutes :(. After installation of rom (google account registered), I disabled all mobile data as I only use my phone over wireless. I'm surprised he (Orange) couldn't tell me how my money had been spent (i.e IP or sites accessed, not just internet usage) so I would at least know where the money had gone and who (rom installation or google registration) were to blame.

It is most likely the Google Registration that will have eaten all of your money, I have found that logging in to my Google account uses around 3 mb of data, but if it started restoring contacts and emails it would very easily use much much more data than that.

I am also very surprised that they are not able to provide you with the websites that your phone has visited as you'd think that they would be keeping records of that if only for a short amount of time. (for all it's worth I would have another go at winging to Orange because it is really unfair that they have allowed £20 to be spent in a couple of minutes)

I really don't think that you are going to see that £20 again :(. When you have flashed a new ROM I would suggest that you remove your SIM card before booting your phone, register with google over WiFi, disable data and then put your SIM back in. I do find this a very annoying issue with Android, HTC have sorted it out by allowing you to log in to your WiFi network before it uses any 3G thus preventing it eating your credit if you don't have a data plan.

My advice is going to be the same advice that I give everyone who has problems with their existing network and that is to switch to giffgaff, its not going to get you the £20 but a £10 goodybag will give you unlimited internet which will save you a bit of money in the long term (because your not going to get hit with those massive charges)
