Guest bigredbus Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 I have noticed that when my batteries get below about 20%, they will not charge using any USB supply. Plugging in the usb cable shows the usual charging notification and then this disappears to be replaced with please plug in your charger. Charging from any % greater than 20% always works so it seems related to the ability of the phone to recognise that the battery is getting charged. It's not the usual usb connection thing because they happily charge normally. Any tips or tricks to get over this ? Anyone else noticed this and have a solution ? Do I need some new batteries ? Thanks
Guest Roph Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Are you stressing your phone or is it idle? USB doesn't provide much current, the phone can easily still be discharging while "charging" from USB. Host controllers can offer a theoretical max of 500mA, though it's always lower, and split between ports.
Guest bigredbus Posted July 24, 2012 Report Posted July 24, 2012 Hi Roph, You ask 'Are you stressing your phone ?'. No, this is with the phone doing nothing (apart, that is, from being a phone), i.e. it is @idle. After attaching the usb cable, charging commences for a minute or so and then it gives up charging and suggests that I plug in my charger (as I said before). Of course, if I keave the charger plugged in the phone just continues to loose charge because it isn't being charged..
Guest hydo1 Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 (edited) On my Atrix it does not charge over USB at all so I don't bother trying to charge it that way. It is, as Roph said, because USB does not provide much current to devices at all. Edited July 25, 2012 by hydo1
Guest bigredbus Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 Does this mean you charge the battery out of the phone or do you use the dedicated charger (with a usb plug) ? Do you use the dedicated charger with a usb connecto ? My phone STARTS to charge then stops and says PLUG IN YOUR CHARGER even when connected to a dedicated charger.
Guest hydo1 Posted July 25, 2012 Report Posted July 25, 2012 (edited) Yes, I charge my phone through a mains charging lead (3 pin UK mains to USB). Does this mean you charge the battery out of the phone or do you use the dedicated charger (with a usb plug) ? Do you use the dedicated charger with a usb connecto ? My phone STARTS to charge then stops and says PLUG IN YOUR CHARGER even when connected to a dedicated charger. If you haven't had this issue before now I would say that you've got a dead battery, see this thread http://www.modaco.co...esan-francisco/ and this thread http://www.modaco.co...349360-battery/ for where to get replacements. Guest bigredbus Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 'I would say that you've got a dead battery' I would have thought so too except it's something I have observed for quite a while, which, unless the batteries die a long, lingering death, is not usual with Li-ion. Seems to me more of a software issue.
Guest hydo1 Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 Have you tried other ROMs? Try some older roms like Moldovan Mile High Mountain Pie and Cyanogenmod 7. Then try some newer ones like Cyanogenmod 9 (CFX and Konstakang). If you still have the issue you can be pretty certain that is your battery suffering a long and painful death
Guest bigredbus Posted August 1, 2012 Report Posted August 1, 2012 Well, I now know that phones are just the same as Motorcycles when it comes to batteries. When you start getting problems with your battery (not charging correctly, inability to charge from 0 charge, it's time to change your battery). Problem solved. New battery charges from 0 charge with no problems. Thanks for your helpful suggestions which were along the lines of 'get a new battery stoopid!'
