FINALLY!!! Cingular is going GSM. Unfortunately, Cingular and AT&T have decided to overlay the already TDMA network with GSM 850 (not the standard 1900).

If you are happy with the 1900 GSM coverage in your area, don't worry about it. But in Chicago (poor me) they are only putting up 850.

I've seen no posts anyplace about it and hardly any quad-band phones are planned yet.

Anyone? Anyone?

p.s. I want that wi-fi card to work as well. I have some software to write.

850Mhz? Is that used anywhere else in the world? If they don't want to use 1900Mhz why not use 900 or 1800Mhz like the majority of the world? Would be very beneficial, espiecally for roaming customers.

nah... it's a matter of frequency allocation. 850 and 1900 are the two frequencies the US uses for wireless phones. So now that GSM is here, guess which frequency they decided to jump on...

850 is US only. Believe me, I wish they would have used ANY of the three. But you know how the FCC is. However, what's the deal with you guys going EGSM? That's not a standard!

So in conclusion, Cingular and AT&T are rolling out 850 where they don't already have 1900 (due to minimal costs and reusing equipment).

Please oh please will there be a smartphone (Xscale) with quad-band...
