Orange S.F. before mod questions

Even using the Forum Search with reasonable combinations of words in "" quotes or not, the terms might come up in various posts but I don't see answers to the questions I have...so here goes.

An Orange San Francisco, supposedly unlocked. Dark grey/black.

How can I find out if Gen1 or Gen2 WITHOUT using the 'Mr Pigfish' utility?

Doing the Vol-down/Power turn-on brings up the [FTM] box but no functionality. Should there be options available via screen or any buttons?

If I want to try a ROM flash method, I have seen posts talking about the TPT files. In the Glossary that refers to Hungarian update. Is that just a method or is it relevant ONLY to certain non-British models?

If you are getting ftm mode it means you do not have cwm installed, which could mean you're phone isn't rooted. But I may be wrong. Search the forum and get more confidence as to what you are doing. The forum here is excellent and always here to help those who help themselves.

Why can't you use the Ask Mr Pigfish utility? It is the best method of finding out whether your device is gen 1 or 2 (If yours is a UK Orange Branded San Francisco I'm almost 100% certain that it will be a Gen 1 device because as far as I know all UK San Frans were Gen 1.

But....... I may be wrong so It is worth getting mr pigfish to check.

Also in order to get into recovery you must have a rooted device and Clockwork Mod Recovery installed otherwise you will get the FTM screen.

Check out this thread on how to install custom roms it also tells you how to manually find out if you are Gen 1 or 2 (to see baseband Settings>About Phone>Baseband Version)

The problem is that I've already copied the pages about "debrick" "flashing" and your "custom" and gone through them along with the searches I already made for my probs which yielded nothing.

The phone, with 2 different sims inserted correctly, only shows a green padlock symbol which also does nothing.

So it is effectively not going to go onto a network or do anything else and getting Pigfish to work normally won't work.

I would like an answer for questions 2 and 3.

And further, with the phone connected to a PC, should I be able to restore functionality with those guides probably without using 'fastboot' ?
