Guest Ishra Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Hi all, Just a quick question. What exactly does enable channels do in the telephony settings? I think it is the cell broadcast feature. I am in poland at the moment and when channels is enabled i get an sms every 10 minutes telling me that I am in the centre of Warsaw! On another network the setting seems to make little difference? Cheers
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 That's great, like just in case you forget or something...? I'm afraid I have no idea what it does, mine doesn't tell me I'm in the centre of Warsaw, maybe there's something wrong with it!

No nothing wrong with yours m8, you just aren't in the centre of Warsaw ;)
Guest Ishra Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Yeh I am warsaw at the moment ( I should have said that  ), but the text message is very much like a cell broadcast. I can't reply to it either. All of yesterday I was receiving polish flirt messages! They seem to have stopped now. The manual is very poor with respect to this feature, there must be some documentation somewhere....
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 You guys must think I'm crazy! It was a joke, OK?
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 I've enabled my channels now, and ticked to receive a channel list, I'll keep you posted if I receive any Polish flirt messages but nothing's happened yet.
Guest Richie M Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Mrjuglas - i know you were joking - so was i thats why i was sticking my tongue out (;)) But, Ishra are complaining that you can't cant get your Polish Flirt messages or complainig that you were getting them? :? (Is Polish Flirt like French Polish   )
Guest Ishra Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 It was fun to get them in the begining even if I did not understand them, But when they started coming every 5 minutes it got annoying. I was also worried that I could be charged somehow....
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Well nothing's happened since i enabled channels and requested the list on my phone, I'll let you know if anything does but don't hold your breath...
Guest ajb3000 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 Do Orange even USE Cell Broadcast? nope
Guest madu Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 It usually SMS's you every time SPV 'changes' to a different transmitter... Supposed to give you Transmitter Information. I guess for testing purposes, but for consumer use - useless..
Guest mrjuglas Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 actually it can have its uses, the network I was on in Italy had it set up so that you could request an sms telling you all about the tourist attraction that you were next to when you request it, never used it myself, cost too much, but I admired the idea.
Guest BigBlue007 Posted April 8, 2003 Report Posted April 8, 2003 This problem is known here in Germany as well. When you are a Vodafone user in Germany and you have a SPV, you receive a so-called "Phantom SMS" from Vodafone every 10 minutes. The original purpose of this is to welcome roaming users from other countries. The 10 minutes come from the SPV itself - it does a relogon to the network every 10 minutes even if you don't move it. We are not quite sure why exactly that happens. We also found that some Vodafone users seem to be not affected. However, to solve this you can either disable Cell Broadcast on the SPV completely, or you define a specific channel that is not in use by the network (actually, networks with CB enabled normally use only very few channels, so you can set up almost any channel number). The issue about disabling CB is that after a restart of the phone, CB is enabled again (IMHO a bug in the SPV software). If you leave it enabled and define a channel, this setting will survive restarts and will prevent you from receiving any further Phantom SMS messages.
Guest Rob.P Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 Thailand is another place where they do Cell Broadcast, threw me a bit when I started getting messages from their networks. Another thing they had over there was deals on roaming, ads saying that if you switched your roaming phone over to our network and typed [whatever] onto phone before phoning they would give you cheap calls to your friends at home. A good idea I thought.
Guest Ishra Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 Well it's stopped now :-) I enabled both settings in channels. BTW how do you define a channel?
