Why rooting of device is required for custom ROM installation

Hello,

I am owning Idea Blade from India. I am new to Android Rooting and installation of Custom ROMs. My basic question is while installing any custom ROM, why do we need to root the device? Is it not possible to use normal OS upgrade procedure present in mobile menu itself as part of "About phone --> System updates --> Storage card updates" and select any of the custom ROMs copied on SD card?

Thanks in advance.

It is not as you have to install things like ClockWorkMod, which need root.

You need clockworkmod so you can install unsigned zip packages. Installing clockworkmod is not rooting. Root means to have the su binary in xbin.

Thanks for response. But why do we need ClockWorkMod for installing custom ROMs? Is it not possible to get custom ROMs (probably as a signed zip package) and install them by following procedure "About phone --> System updates --> Storage card updates" and select any of the custom ROMs copied on SD card?

You're right, you don't need to root your device to flash ROMs using a TPT. You just need to copy the 'image' directory to your sdcard.

Selecting 'sdcard update' (or whatever) in stock or stock based ROM equals booting your device with MENU and volume up keys held down. This will start the TPT if you have the needed files in your sdcard.

It is because installing any custom rom to ur phone is like the process of eating... to eat first u should open the mouth which opens the passage to ur tummy... same like that rooting will open ur access to the system... without opening the mouth u cant eat and without rooting u cant update new roms :P

Thanks KonstaT. Is this mean I can put cm-7.2.0-blade.zip file on SD card from http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=blade and select "About phone --> System updates --> Storage card updates" to get CM7.2 ROM for my device (Idea Blade) without rooting or without using ClockWorkMod?

Thanks in advance.

No, that's a clockworkmod flashable zip. You'll need a TPT (image.bin for gen2/3 devices, or many .mbn and .img files for gen1 devices inside image folder on your sdcard) to use that option. Since yours is an Idea Blade (a Chinese Blade with 256mb of RAM) there is unfortunately no TPTs available for your device.

You can also flash clockworkmod recovery image using fastboot. There's no need for rooting for that either.

Thanks KonstaT for clarification.

I have one question --> You said TPT is not available for Idea blade (a Chinese Blade with 256mb of RAM), but then 223 MB ".bin" file (Stock ROM for Idea Blade) is present in below zip file along with instructions to upgrade Idea Blade firmware with SD card upgrade procedure.

http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/endata/mobile/India/India_SoftWare/201205/P020120521626244417125.zip

Is this ".bin" file is not a TPT file which you are referring as not available for Idea Blade?

Is is not possible to get any Custom ROM like above Idea Blade Stock ROM TPT for firmware upgrade?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's a stock ROM TPT for Idea Blade. I had some recollection there was one but couldn't find it from the ZTE website.

Most people here have european models with 512mb RAM. There just isn't any custom ROM TPTs for chinese blades in this forum (might be in some chinese forums though).
