I don't see anything wrong with G300, so I would personally save some money. But S2 would be a huge jump from G300.Every aspect is much better on S2.

I have both the G300 and the Galaxy S2.

There is no competition. the S2 is better on every level, the touch screen, the speed in using the mobile and apps install very quick. The whole user experience is so much better. It is on a completely different level to the G300. You get what you pay for.

The difference is night and day. Even comparing my Xperia Neo to my G300 (very similar on paper) there is noticeable differences. The GS2 is a huge step up and will highlight just why the G300 is a "budget" phone.

I'd go for the S2 myself. Been tempted by it for ages myself tbf. If only I could find 1 for a reasonable price

I'm one of the odd people that actually 'downgraded'.

I had a Galaxy Note (a bit faster and costlier than an S2) and whilst the speed was good the battery life was very poor, the OS was very unpredicatable with battery drain and I experienced lots of random freezes. Quality control was also poor with all of the 3 units I received from Amazon having issues / physical defects on the screen.

I much prefer the G300. Everything works as I need it to (e.g. I couldn't get Exchange email to work properly on the Galaxy Note), I get none of the freezes, because it's cheap I'm not too bothered about babying it and can use it normally, I'm much happier to mess around with root / ROMs on a device that cost a quarter of what the Note cost (or a third of the S2).

So basically my answer is that it all depends on what you want / how you use your phone. Sure the S2 is far superior on many points and I'm sure (so long as you get a good one without any software issues, or are happy to hack it) that you'll like it. If £300 still counts as disposable income (like the £100 the G300 cost does for me) then by all means go for it and hopefully enjoy. However, be aware that the S2 will still be running Android with all its limitations (don't worry I despise iPhone but I don't think Android is perfection) and it will have whatever rubbish Samsung puts on it too. You might also get a duff unit or one that needs repairs - unlike a previous poster the only thing you get more if you pay for with phones is specifications, reliability and quality control, even on more expensive units is just a rubbish (maybe more so given they're more bleeding edge).

Personally I want my phone to be as useful and fast as possible, but to be as cheap / disposable as possible (even though I intend to keep if for as long as possible) and as reliable as possible. Phones like the S2 definitely hit the speed requirement, fail on the cost requirement, don't seem to be any better than budget units on the reliability requirement and therefore aren't any more 'useful' than a budget phone.

My Galaxy S2 has now gone on Ebay, I find that I am using the G300 as my daily phone, and my S2 is like new, as I don't use it, so see no point in keeping it, the S2 is nice, but the G300 does everything I want it to do, and I am not bothered about it getting a bit of use, the S2 on the other hand I have treated like a toy, and cared for it like no other phone, but the decision was made today, and it went on Ebay earlier today, so G300 for me.

That's exactly it!

Sure I admire these more pricey phones, but when the G300 is good enough and cheap enough just to use rather than worry about it (even if we're ignoring the reliability issues in my above post) then it's much more valuable to me. I'm not sure how we've ended up where so many people are carrying £400-£600 worth of phone in their pocket (and then paying £15 or more a month to insure it) when it's so unnecessary - it seems crazy to me unless you're very rich and that kind of money doesn't matter. Having said that Apple seem to have convinced everyone that having an expensive phone is more important than real essentials (http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/technolog/internet-just-important-air-says-future-generation-119275) so I guess this just shows how good at marketing they are (and how stupid - or rich?) many people are.

On the other hand I'm glad Apple are so expensive because it means I'll never even consider them. Several years back when the iPhone seemed like the most attractive option the sticking point for me was always that the total cost of ownership (on contract and including insurance) was always over £1000 (over 18 months). That seemed a ridiculous amount for someone who had made do with a bog standard phone so I never jumped. Since the start of 2010 when I got my first smartphone I've spent approx £650 (including contracts, no insurance) over 3 smartphones and the G300 has been the cheapest and best yet. The most expensive phone I bought (and kept) was the Dell Streak which cost £300, was the most unreliable and had to go for service about 4-5 times until they finally fixed the problem it had (until it got unreliable and I sold for £100 earlier this year to get the G300). If you take that into account I've spent about £550 over 32 months which is about half what the iPhone would have cost over a much shorter period of time (and if I hadn't mistakenly gone for the more expensive Dell Streak in the hope it would actually be reliable) then I'd have spend even less (by getting a San Francisco or equivalent).

my lg p500 is 2 years old... huge community and lots of available ROMs(CM10 included)... only trouble i've had with it was the power button wear but took care of that by making the search button take it's place. still works fine and dandy and i paid next to nothing for it(like 18euros... catch was 7euros/month for 500mb data plan; still best deal i've ever got), and now for the g300 i paid 29 euros(same 7 euros per month data plan)
