is anyone working on a megadrive emulator?

would it run and if so, how far are we on this project?

lol, how is that the technology used in the megadrive is basic stuff that is now available on most pda's and nokia 7650's, plus the hardware used in the gb colour is on par with the megadrive.

I can't really comment on the specific differences in hardware, however i had assumed the megadrive was fairly different to the GPC. I think the megadrive is more on par with the GBA (although with GBA ha a 32bit CPU), and seeing as Mario is sluggish as hell i'd hate to try Sonic.

Of course i may be wrong, i used initiative as apposed to looking up the actual facts which may be my shortcomming here :)

The megadrive is above the gameboy colour architecture certainly - also has a different architecture.. It may get ported if there's an open source solution that someone can pop on, but starting from scratch would be unlikely..

ZSNES is mostly assembler so is a bit of a bitch to port.. I think SNES 9x would is easier, but I'm not sure that the SPV has sufficient speed to run it well.. The resolution on a screen that size would also look a little off.. Who knows? Look in the gnuboy threads and you'll see the differences between the two types of emulators - if someone decided to make one like the palm gameboy ones (ie using the same techniques), then it could possibly run, but wouldn't be fully compatible..

Kindom Master, are you getting desperate or something

Look, first off it's a phone. The fact that it can do other things is a bonus but you need to understand that first and foremost it's used to make calls and send texts.

Next, both the SNES and the megadrive used custom built graffics chips that pushed the power of them way above their respective processor speeds.

Thirdly, it is well documented that although the chip in the SPV is normally clocked at 132MHz, it's actually clocked at 84MHz (possibly for reasons of stability as hinted by Paul following his trip to Redmond). Although it still sounds like the processor is quite fast, that is a fair drop in performance.

Lastly, although PPC versions are available for quite a lot of old stuff, most of these units have processors running at 300MHz or even 400 MHz so there is a lot more processor power available.

If it's possible then I'm sure the gurus on here will figure it out but until then I suggest dusting down your old megadrive/SNES and having a blast for old times sake. If you don't have one then have a look on ebay, can't be too much these days.
