Okay, so I just got the Huawei Ascend G300, this is my first ever smartphone and I want to bring out it's full potential.

I just want to know what I should do to the phone first, like updates/ apps etc.

I heard they were releasing the ICS update for the phone but it got delayed, though I read on how to download it. Should I?

Also not sure what the hell a "ROM" is or whether or not I should download it

Thanks you!

Ps. I'm new here too.

Start by reading and understanding all the pinned threads..that's what I did.

Thanks. Any idea on what apps to install?

it allows you to flash (install) apps ROMS and other cool things like changing the boot logo ( if i were you i'd read up some more on the pinned threads) also the official ics has been released in NZ. you could install this (i have) . it is probably going to be very similar to the one that will be released here in a few months time :)

Clockworck MOD also allows you to backup certain aspects of your phone in case they need restoring later on .

its probably best to read all of this first (like said above)

This guide in particular should cover your basics: http://huaweig300.com/huawei-g300-install-a-custom-jelly-bean-ics-rom-from-scratch/ (originally posted from this thread: )

I wouldn't go installing any custom ROMs just yet, until you've got a better feel for how Android works. Just root your phone, remove some crap (carefully, and make a backup first), mess around with different launchers, etc. then look into custom ROMs after that.

2. Rooting - first thing you should do, basically a prerequisite to doing anything else with your phone.

3. Clockwork Mod Recovery - Worth doing, let's you back up your current ROM as is, and restore it later if necessary, and a couple other things.

1. & 4. Installing Stock ROMs/Custom ROMs - You'll only have one ROM installed on your phone at any one time, whether you want to use a stock ROM from the Huawei website or some other source or a custom ROM like Infusion or CM10 is personal preference ultimately. However to update to an ICS or Jellybean ROM - as opposed to a gingerbread based one - you'll still have to install the official Huawei ROM first in order to update your baseband, then install a custom ROM after that. If you wait until the Vodafone over-the-air ICS update first then you'll probably get to omit that step.
