As far as I am aware, there are no plans, but it would be very easy to add 3G support to SmartPhone...

What exactly does 3G do? Is it just higher speeds of transfer?

Thanks,

In a nutshell, 3G is higher speed connections, but it also extends some of the "standard" applications. So video calling for instance, isn't just a case of 2 devices communicating with each other however they want (not like 2 pc's with webcams and whatever software you like). Video calling has clear specifications saying what and how the data will be sent, so hopefully it'll work between all handsets/os s etc.

That's my understanding anyway

3G and smartphone should be a hit if the phone manufacturers stop being so cheap and start putting more memory onto the phones

Just got myself a 3G one this week-end, and i can tell u the 3g phones are funny  are 3 band (900 Mhz and 1800 Mhz for GSM support and 21xx Mhz for the cdma support --the real 3g network)

So where 3g have no coverege , the phone will swich to the normal network (2g as phone say), so, if u put the USIM (as the call the 3G call the SIM now ;) ) in a spv, the spv will go in the network (BT cellnet as a rooming). So u can use it as a normal phone (that i'll do till everyone will have one) and if u complain that the SPV have a bad battery, u should see the 3G phones!!!! ONLY 12 H !!!!!!!That's why they give u 2 batteryes and !!!2 CHARGERS --the home one!!!!. " battery i understand , but 2 the same chargers i didn't get it. And if u say maybe I was the lucky one, but all come like so (My mate have 3g shop).

Today i'll try to use the net on it cause it's have 20 M free every month !!!! (better then 10M-orange)

And by the way about the SPV promotional pack, when i phoned Orange about downgrading my bill, to the cheapest one, the CS said that will never end (10M a mounth /6£ !!)

I was shocked!

...give me the ****** keys... in English?

anyway, does anyone know if orange will OVP a standard orange tariff to a 3g? the 3g tariffs are quite good value if you use a lot of air time.

(don't mean data, purely voice?)

[florin:you're saying that the £6 pack is a default? people, what's the minimium running cost of an SVP then?]

I got my NEC e606 3G phone (still the ONLY phone available on the 3G network) a few weeks ago....took it back 6 days later.

It were rubbish!!

Crap battery, crap customer service (20 mins on hold), crap downloads...failed frequently.....bad reception and 3G network drops even in the heart of london (Only way to get it back was to reset the phone).

Quality of pictures was useless and the speaker was so quiet you couldn't have a conversation in a crowded room even on the loudest setting.

...and regarding these amazing download speeds, you can only download content from the Hutchinson 3G network...NOT (yes, NOT!) the internet.

...kinda like being on AOL in the old days.

I highly recommend you don't get one...I'm just glad I held onto my SPV during all this rigmeral.
