Gen 1 to Gen 2 confusion ?

Hi,

A long time ago I installed Swedish Spring RLS4b on my gen 1 blade, all went well and I'm still using the same ROM.

My friend asked me to make his Blade the same as mine so I set about installing the same ROM to his phone. I checked what version his phone was with Mr pigfish before I started and it was a Gen 1.

I followed the instructions in the link below:

The instructions must have changed since I done my phone as my phone is still a Gen 1 but my friends phone is now reported as being a Gen 2.

Why does the phone have to be changed to a Gen 2 ?

Now that the phone is a Gen 2 if I want to change the ROM I take it I will use the procedure for a Gen 2 phone?

Can I change the phone back to a Gen 1 phone and is there any point?

Thanks for any help.

Pretty much all of the newer roms require gen 2, so the TPT methods include conversion from gen 1 to gen 2. From what I gather there isn't any major gain or loss from gen1 to gen2. Therefore there is no need to convert gen2 back to gen1 unless there is a particular problem due to it being a gen2 (unlikely). If the phone was originally a gen1 converted to gen2 using a TPT method, then it is still a gen1 phone. A 'real' gen 2 phone is one that was gen2 from factory, or converted using the windows conversion tool.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

So if I wanted to put a different ROM on the phone would I still use the Gen 1 method even though the phone is reported to be a Gen 2 by Mr Pigfish?

Thanks.

Generally the rom page will have specific info including gen1/gen2 requirements and installation process.

Hi,

yeah I see that sometimes there are different versions of the rom.

So I guess as I've used a TPT (Total Phone Transfer) rom on the phone and it has converted the phone to a Gen 2 then I would just use another TPT rom if I ever wanted to change it for a different rom.

Cheers.

No, you use cwm recovery to install any gen2 rom on it now.

If you ever want to use another tpt on it you need a gen1 tpt or a gen1 to gen2 tpt. You cannot use a gen2 or gen3 tpt without properly converting the phone using the windows flasher. However, as long as you don't have to change partition sizes you can just install any rom via cwm recovery.

@ Snap.IT,

Thanks for that helpful explanation :)

It's a long time since I put the rom on my phone and there was none of this Gen 1 to Gen 2 conversion about then, well not that I recall anyway so you will appreciate my confusion, and despite reading a lot of posts on the forum it was still a bit unclear.

Since I've been messing with my friends phone and reading up a little on the subject I may change the rom on my phone for a more up to date version, that has a few better features, that said my current rom (Swedish Spring RLS4b) has been excellent and I haven't had any problems with it.

Maybe one of the Cyangen roms will be a good choice as from what I have read the phone works a lot faster with these roms, I don't really use my phone for games or anything like that, just making phone calls and sending the odd text message, I sometimes use the internet when out and about.

Cheers.
