Guest fraser Posted April 9, 2003 Report Posted April 9, 2003 OK, here's a mini project for anyone with a little time on their hands. I'm busy on other things right now, plus Windows programming scares me. With GPRS soon to be billed by the byte, no doubt many of us will be increasing the interval between automatic e-mail checking. However, this is still less than ideal. I reckon it would be really simple to put together an app that would schedule e-mail downloads. For instance, most people sleep during the night and get up between 7 and 8. The application would know this and not download any mail, until perhaps 10 minutes before you get up. You can set times that you want further updates thoughout the day, perhaps checking more often during working hours. Not much to it. Just a simple process that checks the time periodically, and calls the mail application, requesting that it does a send & receive (provided there is an API for this). It doesn't even have to be an accurate time check, perhaps check the time every 5-10 minutes. Also, this could be used for other things. You could set up a sound to play at different times, as an alarm. Use PocketMVP or media player to do it, then you can have mp3s/wma for alarm sounds. You could even specify the days that it goes off on. Just have a file containing the times you want things to happen, and the command that is required. Maybe a GUI for configuring it. Also, you'd want to be able to tell Task Manager that it is a system process. At the moment, "kill all non-sys apps" will terminate Pocket Outlooks own syncronisation...it would be great to avoid this. Thoughts anyone?
Guest Petr Nejedly Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 I was just thinking about this today. Does anybody know if such an appp exists? I'm using WM6 email sync (Google IMAP) and dont really have the need to sync my emails at night.
Guest jimbouk Posted February 29, 2008 Report Posted February 29, 2008 Exchange Syncing allows for this (with peak and offpeak settings). I think some people who use pop/imap use one of the "no data" apps to kill mail syncing over night and others simply turn their phones off at night.
Guest markeew Posted April 11, 2008 Report Posted April 11, 2008 I would also find this extremely useful. I am generally on call at night so can't switch my phone off but also do not want to receive my emails why I'm sleeping. What would be ideal is a little tool that switches the automatic send and Receive on/off at configurable times of the day, i.e. switches automatic send & receive to 'every 10 minutes' at 8am and then switches it back to 'manual' at 10pm. If anybody knows of an application that can do this it would be much appreciated.
