I have a big strange problem on my ZTE blade which suddenly started.

When i connect my laptop via wifi tethering and start browsing the internet , suddenly the connection drops.

The wifi on laptop then again shows connecting and stays on for few minutes and again drops. This keeps happening continuously.

I thought its the ROM which is acting up. So i flashed various proven roms like Swedish Snow RLS7 etc.

Still the same thing is happening.

Can someone please help me sorting out this issue.

I have to daily use wifi tether for my work.

So the connection drops but the wifi tethering is still on on the phone?

Have you tried connecting other devices to the phone to check if they drop the connection too?

Since it's the same on all ROMs you've tried i sincerely doubt the problem is with the phone unless there is some setting that is the problem and you change that setting in every single ROM you've tried it on.

IIRC you also said (in another thread) that you have tried various apps to make it work so it seems HIGHLY unlikely that it's actually the phone that keeps dropping the connection.

Which OS are you running on your laptop and does other wifi connections work with it? If they do then remove the connection on your computer and let it make a new one when it finds your phone.

First of all million thanks to you. You have been helping me at various places.

There is no problem with the laptop as i connect other phones and wifi never breaks,

Only when i connect my zte blade the wifi drops off.

I have windows7 on my laptop and i have been using the same with various roms perfectly without any issue of wifi tether.

I am not changing any setting on handset at all. Now i just installed Swedish Snow RLS7.

Immediately i went to stock tether and connected to my laptop.

It keeps disconnecting after few minutes.

Well, I have the same problem and it's because my phone decides to enter in deep sleep state.

Try this app https://play.google....WRhcmtlbi53bCJd

and select "partial_wake_lock".

see if it solves that problem.

When you disable wifi tether, also disable the lock or else you will have too much battery drain

I tried the wake lock application. But still it keeps disconnecting after a while. I tried with 2 different laptops too. Same case with both of them

Is there any problem with tether hardware or files related to it.

Note: wifi doesnt disconnect at all. That means wifi hardware is perfect.

Which carrier do you use?

Does it drop on opening of particular connections (specific sites) ?

I faced a similar problem with airTel once. Connection dropped with some sites..

It's not the drivers since you've tried different drivers (different ROMs), same on different laptops and wifi works so that leaves baseband, have you TPT'd recently?

If wifi doesn't disconnect, something is wrong with your network. Can you try usb tethering to see if the problem still happens that way?

If it does, probably isn't your fault and I would sugest to open an adb shell to your phone, enable 3g and data (disable tethering) and constantly ping google.com (for example) and see if it starts to give timeouts.

How would network affect the wifi tether? if network drops out then the laptop should show limited access icon. Tether should remain stable. I tried usb tether. the connection stays alive continuously.

The problem he's describing has nothing to do with his mobile data connection, it only has to do with the wifi tethering dropping the connection to anything directly connected to it.

DellXCD35, when the connection drops, does your phone turn off wifi tethering so you have to re-enable it or do you have to disable it manually and then re-enable it?

Hi there

I have exactly the same problem with my ZTE blade. I used the phone for tethering back when it had the stock firmware on it and it worked fine. I recently updated it to gen 2 and then put a cynanogen 7 rom on and the tethering problem started. Thinking it was the rom I replaced the rom with the latest version of swedish snow. The rom works wonderfully, but the tethering problem is still there. I start up tethering, I can connect laptop or tablet and surf online but after a few mins it just drops - it then comes back again after a few seconds / a minute or so of its own accord. If I set the tethering with no security is does the same, but the drop outs aren't as frequent.

Wifi and 3g both work on the phone without a hitch - it's just an issue with tethering. I tried barnacle app and couldn't get any kind of connection from my laptop.

Any help much appreciated!! :-)

The wifi on my phone keeps working. I dont have to re-anable it at all. Also i dont have to press connect on my laptop. It disconnects and connects automatically.

Is there anything in your logs that may explain it? I'm running out of ideas here.

Just for the hell of it i installed SS RLS7 in a loop install to try it but then i remembered that i don't have a laptop that run windows anywhere near me... Work fine with Debian connecting to it though.

Just for the hell of it, to find out if this is really a hw problem, could you try the latest Nightly from CM?

Today Wake Lock - partial wake lock option as TigTex suggested worked properly. Today for long time i tested wifi tether dint drop when Wake Lock was also active.

Does this mean phone is going in deep sleep? Why does deep sleep occur again and again.

I just tried the Wake Lock app and it seems to be working. I set it to 'partial wake lock' and that seems to have done the trick. Will test more tomorrow and post again.

Many thanks to TigTex for the tip and to DellXCD35 for starting this thread.

Update: I haven't had a chance to fully test this. Hoping to later today :-)

So how did you fix your problem? I am getting this now with Swedish Snow. Used to work fine previously - I used to be on wbaw's 7b TPT, now on the Swedish Snow TPT. On Moldovan with the 7b TPT, tethering worked fine!

Well I'd like to like Swedish Snow but it appears to be true that tethering in RLS7 at least is broken. Neither USB nor Wifi tether works without flaking out after a few minutes. Back on Moldovan - no problems. Working as it should.
