Tanager in the Philippines since February but snubbed by MS

I am a proud owner of an HTC Tanager from SMART for more than a month now, but feels discriminated by Microsoft because it never mentioned anything in the Smartphone official page about Philippines being the first Asian country to offer the MS Smartphone (you have to dig really deep to find something about it), considering the huge cellular market in our country

Fortunately, the Tanager offered by Smart communications, Inc. (Philippines) is not software lock and can be installed with almost all the unsigned CAB based progems available

Visit www.smart.com.ph to find out more.

Another new player in the Philippine SUN Cellular operated by Digitel which may also offer MS Smartphone soon and from what I heard this will be from Mitac

We are liaising with Smart in the Philippines (courtesy of a very helpful user), and hopefully will become officially endorsed by Smart!

Don't forget to update your profile to include your location, it's great to see our friends from the Philippines on the forum!

Thanks a lot Paul, I will look forward to the day when Smatphones works like the normal PC in the way of Windows updates, drivers download, etc. Having it dependent on the service provider is not a good idea, it must be from Microsoft, the service provider should just concentrate on providing better service and leave Windows to the experts

SMART has been working closely with MS on the SMART Amazing Phone even before the release.

It just so happened that Redmond didn't know that SMART was able to push through with the launch. From my sources, MS Redmond was surprised... and did not in anyway snub SMART Communications. MS Singapore was working with SMART Communcations on this one.

Thanks for the assurance, I was feeling a bit left out and discriminated by MS because until this moment they have not mentioned SMART in the Smartphone page, it seems Orange is paying for the page

I am aware that MS is working with SMART in fact they arranged a meeting with the owners of SMART Amazing Phone (Tanager) last month.

Looking forward to be acknowledge soon!

For those who are interested to buy SMART Amazing Phone (Tanager) please PM lutzh.

As for the Mitac, this is just a rumor and from what I heard this will only be available by May or Jun, will keep you posted.

is this necassarily wise (buying from abroad) if they're going to be issuing more drivers/updates OTA? I suppose we can always distribute the files themselves here...

Just that the www.Coolsmartphone.com seems to be having trouble with his non-orange phone...

Hi Ron, maybe snubbed was not the right word to use but when someone like me who lived in a third world country but happens to have the latest MS Smartphone (Tanager) for more than 2 months now and get to see nothing about it being mentioned on the Microsoft's Mobiles Homepage then you will feel the same way

Hi Mar,

You shouldn't really worry too much about it.

First of all, the news about SMART being the first country in Asia to have the Tanager is a good thing... and it has been in the international news as early as right after the February 14, 2003 launch.

Have a little more trust in fellow Filipinos... Don't snub the local efforts too...

Go and check Google and see what actually shows up.

BTW, try searching through www.infosync.no and www.ppcw.net... you will see it will yield great results... specially the latter. ;)

As for the Microsoft site :?: :?: :?:

Try www.microsoft.com/philippines/mobile

Let me know what you find there okay?

No problem.

BTW, if the Mitac Mio 8380 is indeed going to be launched locally... then expect a first hand report of it from our mailing list... and hopefully we get the guys from SUN Cellular to sponsor another PinoyPocketPC Mobility Event... just like the one we had last Friday where a Qtek 1010 (O2 XDA)was raffled off to the members...
