Guest James Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Just got my car back from the garage it had a bit of a major oil leak all of a sudden while i was out one day.... I previously had the starter motor changed because the old one was broken. Everything was going fine until two months later when i suffered this major oil leak... so anyway i took it to a local garage who i know fairly well and the next day I was told the problem. "When we changed the started motor the old one had a bit missing off the end so we put a new starter motor on coz we could not strip the entire engine to recover this piece." Anyway to cut a long story short... the piece of metal that was missing was found in the gearbox and I had to have a new one because the piece of metal had worn right through the gearbox casing! Here is a picture of it...gearbox.jpg
Guest Rob.P Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 Sorry what was it supposed to be before it turned into that shiny paperweight  You have my sympathies, I have car stuff to do on Sat for MOT on Mon  A bit of joy today though, I'm picking up my Girlfriends new car for her, MGZR (the 1.4 version).Anns MGZR-2.jpg
Guest James Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 something off the end of the starter motor....
Guest HelloDave Posted April 10, 2003 Report Posted April 10, 2003 I hope you let your garage know how you felt about their "minor error"! It's very hard to find a good mechanic; independent ones can be good, but they can't do everything because a lot of non trivial jobs are vehicle specific and need specialist manufacturer's training (which is only given to main dealers!) Main dealers can be good or bad - it depends how pressured the mechanics are for time. The people who worked on your car were probably told to fix your car in x minutes, and they lost the part from the starter motor in the x+1th minute! ;)
Guest James Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 well there is another part of the story you guys dont quite know about..... my girlfried picked it up (joint car) when they explained she agreed to take it but she did not tell me what they said!! so she is getting much of the abuse at the moment! well its fixed now and life goes on!!!...
Guest fraser Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 Hang on a moment, I'm a bit of a car tinkerer myself. How on earth can a bit of the starter motor get inside the gearbox? It's pretty much a sealed unit. Where they doing work on the gearbox as well? I'd be looking for a lawyer if I were you, or at least get this repair done at a vastly reduced rate. If they lost a part inside an enclosed area with moving parts, leaving it there is complete insanity. Completely their fault.
