Am i wrong in saying that virtualdub can only encode mpeg files?

I have tried to encode several other file types but keep on getting audio compression error messages.

Has anyone had any luck encoding avi/divx or other formats using virtualdub, please let me know.

Thanks, :) ;)

I encoded a .avi earlier today (no idea what codec it used though) and i'm just copying a dvd .mpg rip to my phone which is encoded as a .avi divx...

Hi Speedy, could you tell me how your entering in the encoding rates for audio. I think i might be able to help.

Hi stillwaiting

I just follow the tutorial.

go audio -> full processing

audio-> compression

MPEG-layer 3 -> 18kbit/s 11,025Hz mono

It still wont encode avi or anything else but mpegs!

Any suggestions?

Silly question, but you have checked the codecs to read the avis and relevant audio formats are installed?

Sometimes VirtualDub can be a bit fussy - change your compression settings a bit and see if that helps - it might not like certain values. Also make sure both video and audio are in "Full Processing mode".

One other thought - is the audio you're trying to encode part of the avi file? VirtualDub from what I remember doesn't like some audio formats either (windows media might be one?) - try encoding the video with "No Audio" selected and see if that works. If it does you'll either need a codec or you'll have to extract the audio from the avi to a wav with another program and re-interleave it in VirtualDub. I found a program called AVIUtl that does things like this quite well.

Ok i tried doing the encoding without the audio and it seemed to work. So what do i need to do to get the audio working? I only have the divx 5.02 codec installed, do i need any other?

You need to know what audio codec the avi file uses so you can try and download it. If the file plays OK in Media Player then look in its properties and find the name of the codec there, under "Advanced", otherwise there's a program called "GSpot" (I know, but it's not what you think!) which will look at any video file and tell you what codecs it uses.

Hi Speedy

In virtual dub when you come to audio settings try the following

1)Full processing

2)Conversion/sampling rate change to 11025hz/ high quality/mono

3)compression/mpeg layer3/18 kbits/11025hz mono, 3kbs

thanks a lot stillwaiting

it works like a charm now :) ;)

I still have trouble encoding some files though, sometimes i get the error message that there is a conflict with the source audio. I assume that i need an audio codec or something, but i cannot figure out which to get.

Many of them are in xvid video codec but i cannot find info about the audio codec.

what to do?

ClintEastman - that would be grand 8)

"GSpot" (I know, but it's not what you think!) which will look at any video file and tell you what codecs it uses

Are you sure m8, i tried running on a SVCD (Mpeg2) and it couldn't tell me anything about audio etc apart from it was a Mpeg2 :shock: Doh

Would it be helpfull if i posted my config files for the Dub that i used for My Matrix Trailerâ„¢?

yes very helpful, i would love a guide for that matrix trailer the quality is amazing :shock:

i had a brief try at using 1 of the guides on here cant remeber which 1 and not sure if it was for the same version of virtual dub but i blatently got it wrong as the file was too big and it didnt work. found some steps in the instructions were missing. i managed to fill in some of the gaps but not all.

i used virtual dub and i am not overly familiar with the program but could follow instructions as long as there are no huge gaps and the guide mentions the version of the program.

thanks

VirtualDub is, indeed, rather finicky.

I did a whole raft of conversions for my Archos MultiMedia Jukebox, which worked fine, then nothing for a while, then now that I try to do mostly the same thing but at different rez/fps for the SPV, nothing but grief....

Perhaps it's sulking?

Would you recommend Chocolates or Flowers?

Ok ill post it with a little guide of the ins and outs....

Do it this weekend as i have a couple of tweaks to do to it (thats not the finished matrix trailer).

:wink:

Virtual Dub is a powerful and complex tool. Virtual dub to my knowledge does not support editing of mpeg 2 (svcd). For mpeg editing you might want to consider:

mpeg mediator: http://www.mpeg-mediator.com/

converts mpeg2 (svcd) to avi (any codec) or mpeg 1 :)

For (re-)encoding I then would still rely on windows media encoder( :evil: ). Compression results and playback quality are ok and the tool itself is easy to use (follow the guide in this forum).

Er, I know this is an old topic but I have got the knack of windows media encoder ans virtual dub. The link to sourceforge to encode mpegs is fine but since I'm not at all clever when it comes to these things, do I download the VirtualDubMod?? When I do do I need to do something in particular, like save it in a specific place, or does it automatically update VitualDub?? Can anyone help me out as most of the (perfectly legitimate) media files are Mpegs...????

Billy, it runs as a totally seperate Program, just extract it to a new folder and run from there :)
