Just wondering if anyone has done the new (version 1.5 I believe) update on a phone that is Orange decertified?? Does it lock the phone again?

I don't have a keyboard (the update contains drivers for) - so is it wothwhile doing the update - since my phone is currently working better than it ever has before??

Comments please!

mmmm....

is it worth doing the update if you don't have a keyboard?? I really couldn't face any more bother recerting the phone.

That's exactly the question I've been asking. Don't have any solid answers but I'll keep looking.

No MoDaCo guru's any the wiser about this update??

What's in it, apart from keyboard drivers??

Anybody tried it that has any comments??

Anybody still up?? Oh it's friday, and only sad old farts like me are still at their computers!

seems likea driver update only, but there could be a couple of small tweaks here and there (but doubtfull anything that anyone would notice), the major update is 1.5 hopefully coming later this month

Shame, but hey. Glad the keyboard people can finally use their hardware. I'll certainly look forward to (looks hopefully to the sky) a SMS counter in the 1.5 release and perhaps a GPRS counter!? Or perhaps that be too much hoping.

Anyway, cheers for clearing that up Midnight.

Indeed!

Just have to wait & see what the decert problems are with 1.5!!

I don't suppose there's anyway we could gang up on Orange to get a solid way around this whole decerting issue?? Or is that what the Orange OTA dcert is meant to be?

well, basically, the ota way is the correct way of decerting and although it is mentioned that it is 'supposed' to be for developers only, orange know that others are going to unlock (and they dont really care). All this means is that if an app or other software is not certified but you have got it running via the ota decertification then orange can remove all resposibility. Running software on an uncertified phone is your responsibility.

However, smartphone 2003 (Ozone), does not use this method of certification/decertification, instead it prompts the user, warning that the software isnt certified, but still allows you to run the software (again, being your resposibility, not theirs if something goes wrong)

Certification is a good thing no matter what anyone says, it is a way of protecting the end user (ie us) from damage to the phone caused by malicious software (virus's especially), whether the route they chose is is the correct route is where the debate lies.

By removing the unofficial workaround and adding an official way to decert

orange now obviously know who decerted and who didn't, so maybe if

someone's phone fails after the official decert, they may claim that the

person must have used a bad app and refuse warranty replacement...

Just my ideas!

Sounds almost plausable, but for the fact that a factory reset should return the phone to it's out-of-the-box state regardless of what else has been loaded onto the phone. Also, the base software supplied on the phone (Windows mainly!) should be "uncoruptable" by anything other than the bootloader (assuming that O and HTC have got it right!)

Also, it would seem that the Orange customer service people (who ultimately would replace a handset) have no idea that the developers site even exists, & if you mention decertification they go 'Huh??'

So realistically, they will probably never know!

I think the OTA decert is more about Orange realising that even corporate whores Microsoft have an open mind about developers for this platform (free downloads of programs etc), and that their certification process basically negated the potential for developers to create applications.

They had to let people decert the phone in order for any apps to be developed - which is clearly the way Microsoft percieved the phone platform from day 1.

I just think its stupid for there to be so much hassle over what ultimately should be the decision of the phone owner.

I think most of us agree on that!

drblow: There's no way (yet) for the "user" to decide.

Orange took the stance to cover their backs, and i personally have no problem with that. Certification is a good thing, really . Orange's only fallback (which they have admitted outright to) was the huge delay in getting a developers website up and running...

If the site had been released with the SPV there would be a lot less moaning over certification, but its here now so theres no reason to keep moaning about it...

But it seems a bit buggy as many spv can't get registered in the database thus they can't unlock.

Many?

I think theres plenty more successful than unsuccessful. Theres also workarounds and tips for anyone with problems.

Also don't forget that "officially" the developers website is for developers...its not Oranges problem if you can't unlock your phone just to play GNUBoy on...

You know... if just 1 time it doesn't work than a process is buggy

I didn't say it wasn't buggy. You implied that the majority of users were unable to use it...

Many <> majority... hehe

many is really a relative concept.

How many are many? everyone has his own idea about.

Yep, and from my point of view many would imply that more users failed than succeeded.

But no matter hehe...

Well, it's 8:45pm on Tuesday evening in Huddersfield and the OTA de-cert page is unavailable, yesterday, my phone and IMEI number were not found, so I clicked OK to have an Orange representative contact me by email (They havent), whatever the general opinion, there is a problem with the website and hopefully it is down while it is being sorted out.

I'll have another look tomorrow.

Of Course Certification is a bad thing. I bought the phone, so that I can install and run applications. Certification wasn't even mentioned at that point!. If I had known it was gonna be 'locked down' I would have bought an IPAQ (maybe not - hee, hee)

The apparent lack of support from Orange, has only come about because of the 'locking' - Had they not done it, there wouldn't be an issue would there.Their customer support people wouldn't even need to know about OTA unlocking (not that they do anyway!)
