Guest Paul Proctor Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Hello all, I have and infuriating problem when synchronising with Outlook. It seems that if if the phone is removed from the cradle whilst the sync is in progress the status of the sync is lost and when the phone is put back in the cradle, the sync starts again, duplicating all the contact records. This has now happened to me twice, meaning that approx 500 contacts have now been TRIPLICATED resulting in a total of over 1500 in Outlook and on the phone?!?!?!? Is there any way to prevent this, or at the very least de-duplicate Outlook? i would very much appreciate any assistance, as this is making life with the SPV a serious pain!! cheers.....
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Weird, I don't have that problem. If this is a common problem, I could quite write a utility that you could run to de-duplicate outlook...? P
Guest Paul Proctor Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 a utility would be fantastic - is there nothing out there already guys? to keep you updated - my SPV has been syncing now for over 20 minutes, busily reduplicating all my contacts. Daren't take it out or the same will no doubt happen again?!?!
Guest Paul Proctor Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 err - i take it back!! Active Sync has now finished (over 1/2 hour later) and identified all the duplicate entries. i selected the remove all option and hey presto - back to 500 unique contacts!! i am a happy SPVer again.....
Guest madu Posted February 18, 2003 Report Posted February 18, 2003 Mine quite often does not SYNC correctly! It sometimes misses out Contact entries - like it would sync most of it, but miss the address/birthday... V. annoying! Entries usually miss on PC Outlook...
Guest neilg Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 i have to say that whilst i was waiting for my dead SPV to be replaced I went back to Nokia 6310 and my old T68 (couldnt decide which I liked!) whilst I still think that XTND gives you the best options for syncing, Active sync which I used to hate is actually pretty robust and didnt cause me half as many probs as the nokia sync program (duplicate records, deleted records etc etc)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Activesync is widely hated in the Pocket PC world, but I don't think it's THAT bad either :) Definitely better than any of the alternatives! P
Guest cseilern Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 I have had this contacts duplication issue also, but i have not always had a helping hand from Activesync. Still, duplicate contacts/calendar items that are created in the syncing process are easy enough to spot because they all have the same modification date and have all been created at the same time. All you need to do is to create a list view in Outlook and sort by created/modified date - all duplicate contacts will be bucnhed together. As far as Activesync is concerned - ALL syncing programs I came across are riddled with issues and will lead to nuclear results; it is just a matter of living with the beast and learning its sposts.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Here ya go, a 'Duplicate Contact Remover' that I quickly knocked up. After you click OK at the initial dialogue, it will start doing it's stuff. Altho you will see nothing on screen, it is working! A dialogue will appear when the process is complete. You should be able to watch stuff disappearing from Outlook as it's working. It will take a while on big contact databases. Of course, make sure you have backed up your contact database before running this app, blah blah blah... PDCR.zip
Guest Paul Proctor Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 thanks Paul - the app works great. Even after an active sync de-dupe it still found another 100 or so duplicates and removed them all. i'm now syncing properly again!! cheers....
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 19, 2003 Report Posted February 19, 2003 Cool! We aim to please... :) P
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted March 4, 2003 Report Posted March 4, 2003 Don't cross post please mark.lucas. People are already offering suggestions in Main. Deleted.
