Guest PaulOBrien Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 After numerous leaks, Samsung have officially announced the Galaxy S4 Active, a harder wearing, IP-rated variant of the Galaxy S4. The device itself features broadly similar specifications to the 'regular' S4 - a 1.9GHz Quad Core CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM + microSD, LTE connectivity, a 5" 1920x1080 LCD (no AMOLED in this model!) with 'glove touch', Android 4.2.2, an 8 megapixel camera with LED Flash light (more details below), a 2 megapixel front camera - all powered by a 2600mAh battery. As well as the 8 megapixel rather than 13 megapixel camera - which offers a unique 'Aqua Mode' to increase visual quality and clarity for enhanced underwater images and video - the device is IP67 rated for dust and water ingress. This means that it has a '6' rating for solid particle protection - 'Dust tight - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact' and a 7 rating for liquid ingress protection - 'Immersion up to 1m - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Tested for 30 minutes'. Pretty good! The device measures 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm and tips the scales at 151g, compared to 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and 130g for the 'regular' S4 - not too much of an increase. I quite like the design myself (particularly as it's expected to be available in some interesting colours - Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare!) although the front buttons look a bit 'budget'. Hats off to Samsung for getting microSD and a removable battery in there while still retaining the IP rating! Availability and price are TBC, however Phones4U have already been in touch with the obligatory 'we'll be stocking it!' mail. Any takers? Click here to view the item
Guest Michealtbh Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Those buttons are hideous. Pair them with Touchwiz and that's one really ugly device.
Guest 3shirts Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Impressive specs for an IP67 rating. I'd be very interested to see what the underwater image quality is like. Might recommend this to a friend who has dropped no less than 3 phones down the toilet or in the sink.
Guest andybarker Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Interesting to see a high spec "resistant" phone. A previous boss of mine went through a few tough phones when out and about - they were all much more ugly than this (and much tougher as well). Would like to see if insurance companies reject claims for this device being dropped down the toilet!
Guest Sere83 Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Those buttons are hideous. Pair them with Touchwiz and that's one really ugly device. haha indeed, definite eye gouge, just hideous, i'd be embarrassed to show that to my friends, looks like a blind dog designed it...in the dark.
Guest Simon O Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 I can think of one person that will want the orange one!
Guest The Soup Thief Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Michaeltbh & Sere83 - are we looking at the same buttons? Yeah, they're not gorgeous but I'm not sure they're all that fugly - plus they've got to do the job and as flibblesan says, capacitive keys don't register presses when they're wet, so it's gotta be buttons. That said I can't see how they could be any easier on the eye. On the other hand, given that the capacitive touchscreen isn't going to work when the face of the phone is wet, I'm just wondering how useful it is to make the buttons work under water. Similarly is there a hard key button to operate the camera under water? And how do you select the camera app if the touch screen doesn't work when wet? Hopefully those clever chaps in Seoul have thought all this through...
Guest vermat17 Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Apparently the volume button doubles as a hard camera key.
Guest The Soup Thief Posted June 5, 2013 Report Posted June 5, 2013 Again though, how do you select the camera app when you're in the rain / the pool / your undersea kingdom (for example)
Guest shobhit_1990 Posted June 6, 2013 Report Posted June 6, 2013 The new definition of ugliness is SAMSUNG............HTC One here i come.........
