"Unfortunately, (YouTube | Google Play Store) has stopped"

So out of the blue, last night, YouTube fails with the dialog message:

"Unfortunately, YouTube has stopped" "Report/OK"

 

Choosing Report delivers:

"Unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped"

 

Opening Google Play directly works normally.

 

Media Audio via the built-in speaker has also gone. However, Phone Audio works via its usual earpiece. Both Phone & Media Audio work via a headset.

 

Ringer and Alarms don't sound.

I was getting a lot of forced closures on several of my apps and eventually I could not access the play store, gmail and talk (not that I ever used it).  The Met Office app was one of the first offenders for shutting down spontaneously.  My phone went into terminal melt down and had to go back to the shop to be sorted.
