Battery Life

How is everyone finding the battery life? Specifically the standby battery life. The Hudl has similar "video playing battery life" to my iPad Mini, but where the Mini lasts a few weeks between charges with fairly light use, I don't think the Hudl is going to last more then 3 days (seems to drop about 33% a day doing nothing).

 

The battery meter in Android suggests most of the power sap is Wifi, but I don't really want to turn Wifi off when it's asleep (the iPad does't do that either).

 

Anyone else been impressed / unimpressed with the battery life?

 

P.S. Before anyone jumps on it.. I know the iPad is massively more expensive, I'm not suggested they should be comparable devices, just using it as a point of reference on battery life ;)

Battery life is excellent.  One of my primary uses is ebook reading and I'm getting around 10 hours total from 100% to 0%.

Played Leisure Suit Larry for 4 hours and still read for...quite a while afterward before plugging it in overnight.

 

More than happy.

Good battery life here too, it didn't use much over the weekend when it was just sitting idle. That's with WiFi always set to stay on during sleep too!

Hi GRUMPYDev, (sorry, love the name... ;) lol)

I assume you have been into your WiFi settings...

1) Tab on Menu button to show list of options...

2) Select Advanced

3) Where it shows "Keep Wi-Fi on during Sleep" you've changed it to Only when plugged

Thats what I do to save battery life, unless on mains power and then it keeps the WiFi alive...

Is that the Scan for new network setting? I have that switched off.

I did a test over the last couple of days, charged both the iPad and the hudl, unplugged both and left them unused for 24hours. Hudl dropped 12%, iPad 1%. This is with WiFi on in the hudl settings, and the iPad doing whatever it does with WiFi, which is apparently to sleep and periodically wake up.

So battery life is alright, if not stellar.. Would be great if WiFi sleep would work properly and periodically wake for notifications.

10 hours trawling the internet with music in the background no problem on a full charge. I have the screen on minimum brightness as it burns my eyeballs otherwise.

I have no issue with battery life, either. Mine is superb! (sorry! Didn't mean to rub that in your face :) )

I was gobsmacked to discover the battery had a rated capacity of only 1500mAh!

That's smaller than most phones.

The battery usage is actually pretty incredible.

Idle draw is literally near-zero and total life out of such a minute battery is simply fantastic power saving at this performance level.

The more I learn the more impressed I get.

No. Only if you are rooted, use Root Explorer and in System you'll find a file called build.prop.

In that file along with a whole bunch of other stuff is an entry;

WiFi.supplicant_scan_interval=15

Change the number 15 to 180.

Yeah, I know about the setting and build.prop etc, but I thought that was the interval between scanning for new networks, and has no effect if you have that switched off. I actually changed another setting in build.prop before I went away on Friday and managed to brick my Hudl.. need to do a reflash back to stock tonight :)

Weird.. whenever I change that value and save the file it bootloops the device.

Ah, sorted.. it was setting the permissions on the file wrong.. Android doesn't like that :)
