Guest Alkapton Posted October 13, 2013 Report Posted October 13, 2013 Found Storage Defragmenter on the Play Store. It defragments internal storage. When I ran it I got an extra 32meg of free space. So I recommend it.
Guest blacksh4dow Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 Flash memories shouldn't be defragmented

Guest Garnt Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 Flash memory can only support so many writes/re-writes, defrag will do loads of these when running.
Guest dalyer Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) Google flash memory defrag to find lots more on this and why you should not do it. Certainly not on a continuous/background basis anyway. Edit: just looked at the app on Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sa.storaged I don't understand this comment: Disclaimer: There is a benefit to defragmenting a flash drive, although it is not nearly as noticeable as the performance benefit of defragmenting a regular drive. This app simulates the defragmentation proces. Does the app actually do anything for flash devices or not? It seems to suggest that it just "simulates" the defrag for flash drives?!? Guest Garnt Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 (edited) On a regular hard drive, the drive heads need to move across the disk platters to read the data so the less fragmented the data, the less the heads need to move. Flash memory has no heads so defragging flash memory will have little, if any, increase in performance. Whilst the app will defrag files on the flash memory, the gains are not worth the wear and tear on the phone Edited October 14, 2013 by Garnt
Guest Alkapton Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 The comment about simulation on the apps page confused me also, but running it did make a difference. I guess flashing roms could also hurt memory? So perhaps just use this when you start having problems updating apps?
