So you can use your Smartphone as a modem for a desktop or laptop, but my question is can you do the same for a Pocket PC and get online on the Pocket PC via IRDA?

This is a guide that Orange sent to me a little while ago.

It works fine on my iPAQ 3970.

Setting up Orange GPRS on Pocket PC 2002 via Infrared with the SPV

On the SPV

From the Home screen, press Programs

Scroll to Accessories and press Action (depending on how your Programs menu is configured you may need to press More a number of times)

Scroll to Modem Link and press Action

You will be displayed an information message warning that ActiveSync may not function properly if Modem Link is active. Press OK

Set the Connection option to IrCOMM

Press Menu

Scroll to Activate and press Action

Press Home

On the Pocket PC

Place the infrared port on the SPV in line with the infrared port on the Pocket PC

Tap on Start and then Settings

Tap on the Connections tab at the bottom of the screen

Tap on the Connections icon

Tap on the Dialing Locations tab

Tap on Dialing Patterns

Ensure that all three fields are set to G only

Tap OK

Tap on the Connections tab

Drop down the Internet Settings menu and select New

Enter a name for the connection

Tap on the Modems tab

Tap on New

Enter a name for the connection here also

Ensure that the connection device is set to Generic IrDA Modem

Set the speed to 19200

Tap Next

Ensure that the Country Code and Area Code fields are blank

Enter *99# in the Phone Number field

Tap Next

Untick the option to Wait for dial tone before dialing

In the Extra dial string modem commands box enter the following:

+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”orangeinternet”,””,0,0

Tap Finish

Tap OK

Establishing the connection

Tap on Start and then Settings

Tap on the Connections tab at the bottom of the screen

Tap on the Connections icon

From the Internet Settings drop-down menu select the connection you created above

Tap on Connect

You will be prompted for a user name and password, leave all fields blank and tap Connect

What about us T-Mobile users? Our APN won't fit in the space you indicate for orangeinternet. Any ideas?

Well I suppose you need to speak to T-Mobile and find out what command string you need to use to access their GPRS service.

...either that or just use it as a IR dialup modem and don't use the gprs.

+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”internet2.voicestream.com”,””,0,0 ... too long for Connection Manager!! :)
