Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 "]Yeah, server is down! Naah, can't be. I can get the other groups on MS' server (?)
Guest Will Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 Just tried it, might be a dns problem somewhere, I'm just on it now.. Not much new tho.. (lots of references to modaco tho  ) Using this url: http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroup...=1&nds=collapse However the frequent input from Micro$oft seems to have died off? Will
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 However the frequent input from Micro$oft seems to have died off? I partake in the MS group as much as I do at modaco. Different things (and there's still a lot of free-time participation by MS employees and Paul's buddy Robert Levy)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 It's a real shame MS can't contribute more here... Newsgroups are OK, but the forum is better for me, simply for the reason I have web but not news access from the office! (And the forum experience is so much richer than newsgroups) P
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 Meeting the [MS] guys in Redmond was cool, Neil Enns = Top Bloke :) P

(And the forum experience is so much richer than newsgroups) Agreed, yet I'm still a fan of usenet; like the simplicity there. The big advantage here (modaco) is that of flexibility - PM, links, HTML and stuff....all the stuff that's not welcomed in non-binary groups by sad old duffers like me
Guest Bazz Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 I prefer this board simply because I can check it anywhere and it remembers which topics I've read and which I haven't. As a regular with far too much time on my time I tend to try to read/skim most posts. I can't check newsgroups at work (except through websites) and then have to work out which messages I've read and which I haven't.
Guest Firaas Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 The newsgroup is turning into a newbie hangout, which is beginning to get annoying. Most of the messages are either newbie messages, rants, or repeats/crossposts of topics which have been discussed on here.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 just send them to the beginners section here, but suggest (nicely)that they do a search first :)
Guest Kallisti Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Paul, MS have all their newsgroups in a web interface on msdn.microsoft somewhere... Ahh... http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups/
Guest pete1312 Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 As a complete NoooB (ok, I'm starting to learn a little), I would simply like to state how easy it was to: a) join this site; :) do searches on it; c) sit back and learn and (occasionally) contribute. Full marks to Paul for setting it up (and to various others who have helped me along the way (albeit only in terms of how to use this site - not how to get the SPV Modem working - which was all I was originally interested in). In contrast, whilst I can access the posts in the MS Smartphone Newsgroup, I have no idea how to join it; frankly no longer have a desire to learn; and agree with previous posts that it's all repetition and (dare I say) "Newbie" stuff!! (ok, I said it).
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 it's all repetition and (dare I say) "Newbie" stuff!! (ok, I said it). So who else is going to help new SPV-owners in the MS group (by referring them here if need be)? If everyone had your attitude there'd be considerably less visitors here. How do you think I "discovered" that modaco.com existed? When replying to posts in the NG, I often mention specific modaco threads or refer the person to a search of this board - likewise, I've also referred to microsoft.public.smartphone posts when posting here. It's interesting to read what the MS people have to say and, as Paul will no doubt confirm, Robert Levy (MVP) is a regular poster there and is a veritable mine of information on all things mobile. Relax, guys - the MS NG isn't a competitor to modaco, the two just supplement each other.....
Guest robertch Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Server is there, french version of NG is there too. Can still post via web as detailed in other responses.
