Guest sebset Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 I didn't do it, but I found a topic in 'microsoft.public.smartphone' of a guy who tried to convert its SPV as a webcam. Damned! http://www.cewindows.net/newsportal/articl...blic.smartphone I'm going to try it! :)SPV Web cam.jpg
Guest Firaas Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 Heh. Shame that the USB/camera use the same slot...
Guest Simon Desser Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 I'm the saddo who tried this!! but it was difficult doing it at work whilst people were in the office (hence the picture of a bottle of Tippex!!) I've tried again at home and here's a better picture. The frame rate using infrared is about 3 frames a minute!!! so it's useless as a webcam, ;) however, if the camera was inbuilt, or if it could share the USB connector, then it WOULD work! Anyway, this system is absolutely brilliant for controlling your SPV from your PC, and sending Text Messages. :)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 If only i were allowed camera's onsite at work :)
Guest cseilern Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Looking at the screenshots, I am assuming you are using that remote control software to take the pix. Since the camera uses the same connector as the charge/sync/cradle, I am assuming you must be using iRDA to have the camera attached AND be able to control the Smartphone. I guess that would probably explain the tipex shot (-where the phone is obviously lying on its side), but how on earth did you manage the portrait?
Guest Simon Desser Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 To get the portrait, I attached the camera to the phone, and stood the phone up on my desk, leaning against a speaker. Then I dangled my infrared adapter over the top of the speaker so the two ports lined up. You're right, I used the remote software to take the pictures but it is very slow using Irda, just think though, if the phone had bluetooth? Cheers Simon
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 By holding the phone upright witin range of the IR port i would assume...
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 So how is this a webcam? You can't actually transmit that image over the web? P
Guest Simon Desser Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 There "MUST" be a way of transmitting the images across the web (using your PC's software rather then the phone's) but the speed over irda is way too slow, if someone could make an adapter that enabled you to connect the camera and the USB cradle at the same time then it "MIGHT" work? I know it's pretty useless really, but it was just a bit of an experiment!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 I've heard of applications that will broadcast a specific section of your desktop over the internet webcam-style-ee. :)
Guest benny Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Another option is a cyclic FTP - basically, you dump an image from your phone to a certain file on your PC (image.jpg or whatever), and thern FTP this image up to the WWW every so often. Not strictly speaking a webcam, but its a work around that has been used before. B
Guest fixit Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Maybe you could use one of these as a workaround? http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...oduct_uid=43667
Guest Firaas Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 I've heard of applications that will broadcast a specific section of your desktop over the internet webcam-style-ee. :) Netmeeting/Windows XP's built in sharing will do that...
Guest fraser Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 There's a Bluetooth SDIO card out, and a Wireless LAN one is in the pipeline. That would solve the IRDA slow speed issues. Has anyone tried these? I wonder if Internet pass-thru works via them. The Wireless LAN one would rock, all the functionality of having it in the cradle but portable!
Guest bobroberts Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 and no addtional memory cos it'll take the same slot :)

Problem is that AFAIK drivers haven't been released for them, and most people wouldn't be willing to waste £90 just to test one...
Guest fraser Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 no addtional memory cos it'll take the same slot Yeah, I thought about that being a major downer. If the cards themselves had integrated memory for your use, then they would be really ideal. It would bump up the price quite a bit though!
Guest fraser Posted February 22, 2003 Report Posted February 22, 2003 Just had a thought...when I was playing around with my firewall to open it up slightly for my SPV, I noticed in the logs that I was getting hits from the phone. So far I've noticed that it doesn't always come from the same IP address, but all the hits have been from 193.35.129.0/24, which is a class C, so that means only 254 IPs, and I think there are more users of GRPS than that! It must be divided by geographical location, I've not gone very far since getting my SPV! Anyway, surely you could use GPRS to upload the image to the web server. You'd probably need to put together a client side app, but it would be another really cool feature, and possibly a first for the SPV. A fully portable remote camera. Mmmmmm. I'm just waiting for the first Claire Swires style incident with a picture phone to break!
