Is it possible to move navbar to side in landscape mode?

Has anyone managed to move the navigation bar from the bottom of the screen to the right hand side when using the Hudl in landscape mode? I think it would free up a fair amount of useful screen space.

I have searched around for this and saw suggestions on other forums to use GMD Autohide Soft Keys or Ultimate Dynamic Navbar. I tried both options and neither really worked for me. When I tried using GMD, SystemUI kept crashing.

I'm not sure it's easily possible. I've also tried GMD and had similar SystemUI crashes. I've also tried the phab7 xposed module to force phone layout - which also causes the SystemUI to keep crashing. I suspect the SystemUI.apk doesn't have the required "phone" layouts to work in the phone layout with the nav bar on the side in landscape.

 

I'm not sure whether it's possible to add the layouts to the SystemUI.apk so that they're available to use.
