Guest PaulOBrien Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 When Tesco announced they were making an Android tablet, everyone assumed it'd be rubbish. After all, supermarket tablets usually were. Surprisingly though, it wasn't - the hudl got the low cost device formula just right, good where it needed to be, cost saving elsewhere, and it was a sales hit, shifting over 750,000 units. Today Tesco announced it's successor, the cleverly named hudl2!What does the hudl2 have in common with it's predecessor? First up, a bargain price - the tablet will cost £129 when it launches on October 9th and will be included in Clubcard Boost, meaning it can be picked up for as little as £65 worth of Clubcard vouchers. Almost everything else about the tablet has been overhauled. The hudl2 is bigger, the 7" screen grows to an 8.3" 1920x1080 full HD panel. The sound is better with Dolby optimised audio from 2 rear speakers. The WiFi now supports the 5GHz band. The CPU is better - out goes the Rockchip processor, replaced with Intel Inside, probably in the form of the Atom Z3735D. RAM is bumped to 2GB. It's slimmer and more colourful, with 8 shades now offered. Finally, the new hudl2 is safer, with preloaded enhanced parental controls for up to 7 users - a big concern for the target market. So what's not to like? Not a lot given what we know so far. A generous-at-this-pricepoint 16GB of storage is included, expandable via microSD (the specs say to only 48GB, but I don't believe that). The 5 megapixel rear and 1.2 megapixel front cameras aren't likely to be great, but they should be adequate for a tablet. If you hold it up and take photos you're not cool anyway. ;)An extensive range of accessories is under development, we're quite taken with the flip case and keyboard cases pictured below. very smart (albeit not finalised as yet!). We've noticed a port on the bottom (charging?) and on the left side (HDMI?), if HDMI output is included, that's another great feature! Finally, when you buy the tablet you'll get a host of offers and vouchers for Tesco products in box (as with the original hudl), including £25 free blinkbox credit to spend on movies, books and music, £10 off F&F clothing when you spend £50, £10 off Tesco Direct when you spend £50, £15 off Tesco.com when you spend £60 and 10 free 4 x 6” photos when you buy 50 at Tesco Photo. We're pretty excited about Tesco's new tablet and we'll have a full review after launch day, so stay tuned! Oh, and there's an orange one. ORANGE! Guest Jon Green Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 I suspect the 48GB is 16GB internal plus 32GB microSD. If so, it's a bit of a shame they didn't include SDXC, but at the price I guess you can't argue too much. With any luck it'll support USBOTG, so we can connect more substantial storage when needed. Looks sweet. The Nexus killer?
Guest PaulOBrien Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 I very much doubt it's limited to 32GB microSD cards tho...P
Guest rferrett Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 What is the Atom processor going to be like for gaming? In all honesty my main use for tablet is playing games OTG, and I had been seriously considering the Nvidia Shield tab..... But the Hudl, at this price point, looks pretty darned tempting. Mind oyu it ends up bewing false economy if it can't actually do what I want it to do huh?
Guest PaulOBrien Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 comicbookguy, sure thing!rferrett, it's an unknown, but it'll be less powerful than the shield, no question!Seems to be benchmarking reasonably I think... time will tell!P
Guest comicbookguy Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 wonder what the chance of seeing Android L on it is, either officially or unofficially

Guest BlueMoonRising Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 Having been stung by Intel & Orange with an Orange San Diego (which was promptly abandoned on ICS) I'll hold off with anything bar a desktop that says "Intel Inside". Early indications are that it is very laggy although full reviews may show different.
Guest rferrett Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 That is the other big thing for the Shield IMHO, Nvidia have been pretty excellent about updates so you'd imagine it will stay current for a while...... Hmmm..... Well I guess it will all be about how much my car costs to get through it's MOT!
Guest PaulOBrien Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 I would NOT buy a Hudl2 if updates are important to you tbh.P
Guest Simon O Posted October 4, 2014 Report Posted October 4, 2014 Having been stung by Intel & Orange with an Orange San Diego (which was promptly abandoned on ICS) I'll hold off with anything bar a desktop that says "Intel Inside". Early indications are that it is very laggy although full reviews may show different. San Diego suffered from being one of the very first Intel devices. Android for Intel has matured a lot since that device and there are no issues like before. App compatibility is no longer an issue and the CPUs themselves have more than enough power to provide a decent experience.
Guest Daniel Meah Posted October 5, 2014 Report Posted October 5, 2014 as others have said it has a Z3735D (same as the likes of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Quad-core-32GB-VOYO-8-inch-Windows-8-1-Dual-Camera-Bluetooth-WIFI-MID-Tablet-PC-/301264173276?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item4624be78dc) this appears to be a benchmark of the device tooo http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/890860
Guest PaulOBrien Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Bounty for the first person to get Windows 8.1 running on the Hudl2? ;-)P
Guest Patrick73 Posted October 6, 2014 Report Posted October 6, 2014 Just seen two in store, shocked has less storage than the first one. only showing 9.12gb total storage. Lets hope there is true apps2 sd too. Apart from that looks nice
Guest glossywhite Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 Dave Cryer at Geekanoids has literally just tonight published an unboxing and first impressions video of the Hudl 2:
Guest rferrett Posted October 14, 2014 Report Posted October 14, 2014 So then Hudl 2 vs Smart Tab 4G then huh?
