How to root your Hudl 2

In Fastboot mode from button press,( both volume buttons and power button) I can get pc to recognise Hudl 2 as Intel Android Bootloader Interface from drivers in 'IntelAndroidDrvSetup1.1.5' and the 'Intel Phone Flash Tool v3.1.4.0' shows connected status port 2/0/5.

Might this help us advance our long term root objectives.

Well regardless of how I try to run fastboot-windows ( or fastboot from the SDK ), I always receive the error :

D:\Temp\Hudl2\adbfastboothudl>fastboot-windows.exe -i 0x1d4d flash system system
.hudl2.rooted.20140924.194555.ONLY.r2.img
target reported max download size of 1259571882 bytes
error: cannot load 'system.hudl2.rooted.20140924.194555.ONLY.r2.img'

It doesn't seem to matter where the image file is located, or whether I use the full path to the image. I have checked the permissions on the file, and it's accessible to all users. Tried running as an administrator as well.

This hudl2 has had the OTA update applied - don't know if that will make a difference ?

I'm not rooted, but I just got the 9mb OTA update, and it seems to have worked this time around! It's 20141009.191216, I think it's just bug fixes and stuff.

Hey all, if any of you have issues with the following error 'device not connected' you need to install the required drivers, I found this when I was trying to get mine to flash and it wouldn't work. I downloaded and ran the driver tool from here (Sorry its pointing to XDA-Devs) but it worked a charm and im now rooted.

Thank you Paul for your hard work on this and I look forward to customising this nice little piece of kit further :)

The OTA that has re-appeared is the same OTA that was briefly available the other day.

MD5 (hudl2_ota_20140924.194555_v1.1.1rc1--to--20141009.191216_v1.1.2rc1.zip) = a005ebe697f0f59f50036bf33ca125d3

I would advise NOT applying this over a rooted system at the moment!

Paul, I haven't yet rooted but may do so in the future. Do you think accepting the OTA will prevent future root?

Hi Paul,

I got my Hudl 2 and it got upgraded to 20141009.191216 immediately after startup. Do you have a system image to root this? Or the last system image would just work fine? Can you please help.

Thanks,

Biswa

Good morning all!

I have updated the root files in the first post. The major changes are support for the new ROM version and the /system remount problem is now fixed.

Details are below on what you need to do. Enjoy! :)

If you are on stock 20140924.194555

Apply the latest OTA then root using the 20141009.191216 r1 file (check the version shows as 20141009.191216 after OTA!).

If you are on rooted 20140924.194555

Re-root using the new 20140924.194555 r3 file, apply the OTA, then re-root using the new 20141009.191216 r1 file (check the version shows as 20141009.191216 after OTA!).

If you are on stock 20141009.191216

Root using the new 20141009.191216 r1 file.

If you are on a different version

This should not be possible at this time. Tell us which version you are on. :)
