Guest DaveGriff Posted October 18, 2014 Report Posted October 18, 2014 Anyone managed to get USB Async audio working on the Hudl 2. I use my note 3 to connect to a Fiio X3 and Naim DAC VI no problems, but the Hudl, despite being recognised by both DACs (and actually booting up the Fiio when plugged in) produces no sound through either DAC.
Guest DaveGriff Posted October 25, 2014 Report Posted October 25, 2014 Solved it, partially. USB Audio Recorder Pro works, although under the 24 bit setting it locks the Huddle after a few seconds..
Guest ratykat Posted November 7, 2014 Report Posted November 7, 2014 Hey there, Thanks for opening this thread as USB audio is something I'm really interested in. Just wondering if you used one of the USB y cables so it can charge and use a DAC at the same time? I'm toying with the idea of a car build with it you see, and my nexus 7 2013 just will not play ball for me. Cheers
Guest Dreddguy Posted November 11, 2014 Report Posted November 11, 2014 I have a Hudl 2 and am listening to my headphone amp through USB OTG Cable via a HiFiMeDIY ASYNCHRONOUS U2 Sabre USB DAC. It works just fine playing both Ogg Vorbis and FLAC 24/96. I can only playback music by using USB audio player PRO. I have tried a number of other players including Poweramp and Neutron without success, no sound at all. I cannot understand why the other music players will not work. Now while USB Audio Player PRO is fine for my locally stored music it's no good for streaming or listening to net radio via USB AUDIO. The Hudl 2 is running KitKat 4.4.2 so I should be able to listen to USB Audio natively with all Apps rather than by completely bypassing the Android audio system as with USB Audio player PRO. Is there an option I'm missing to enable USB Audio?

I have no problem using VLC on the Note 3, but no sound through either of my DACs using the Hudl 2 (apart from USB Audio Pro). There must be an option somewhere to enable async USB. Guest Dreddguy Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 I assumed that asynchronous playback was just automatic with the HiFiMeDIY ASYNCHRONOUS U2 Sabre USB DAC. I have not found any options for this DAC at all. The Naim DAC V1 is at the polar opposite of the U2 DAC pricewise so you may have more options open to you.
Guest SilverDad Posted November 25, 2014 Report Posted November 25, 2014 I know this thread is a few days old, but I thought I would answer the original question. Android 4.x has no support for USB audio. This is why most music players do nothing with USB audio and why there is no setting for it. The USB Audio Pro app drives the USB port directly with it's own internal audio stack. Android 5 (Lollipop) does have USB audio support, but whether that will appear on the Hudl2 is unknown.

For whatever reason the Hudle won't play ball.

Actually, you might be right. I suspect the support for USB audio in the Note 3 with Android 4.x (and other Samsung devices) is due to Samsung's tweaking of Android.
Guest DaveGriff Posted January 22, 2015 Report Posted January 22, 2015 Well, just downloaded and installed the latest upgrade from Tesco and now USB audio doesn't work at all, well done the Tesco Hudl team..
Guest theadmans Posted January 23, 2015 Report Posted January 23, 2015 Well, just downloaded and installed the latest upgrade from Tesco and now USB audio doesn't work at all, well done the Tesco Hudl team.. ....well that is a downer Dave. Is that with the USB Audio Pro App that it does not work? I was thinking of buying a pricey USB Geek Out Head Amp and DAC to use with my HUDL 2 and Sennheiser HD650 Headphones. Not sure I want to risk it now. I have installed the new update but don't have a USB DAC at the moment to test it. Maybe I will buy a cheaper one before getting the Geek Out.

My Note's getting a lot of use now, one of the reason's I purchased the Hudl was to take over as a USB audio source. Until Lollipop comes to the Hudl, or until I root it and put another ROM on, that's it for USB audio on this device.
Guest DaveGriff Posted May 9, 2015 Report Posted May 9, 2015 Looks like the new OTA update from Tesco has restored USB audio functionality via USB Audio Pro. Lollipop would be the ideal though as then it'd be possible to watch videos from YouTube etc, and listen to the sound via USB.
Guest theadmans Posted September 29, 2015 Report Posted September 29, 2015 I tried asking this in the main New Update (Lollipop) thread but got no replies.Has anyone with the new Lollipop update tried a USB DAC on it yet ?USB Audio is supposed to be part of Lollipop but I would like to confirm it works (without the use of apps like USB Audio Pro) before I purchase a USB DAC.
Guest Malcolm.smith Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 My lollipop update for Hudl 2 installed today.I can confirm that I am now listening to Spotify through my Hi Fi system via an HRT MICROSTREAMER DAC connected to a standard, un-rooted Hudl 2.Google play works too.I have an OTG cable connected to a cheap powered USB hub that provides a connection and power for the HRT microstreamer . It worked straight away with no problems. At last. I've been trying to get this to work since I bought the Hudl
Guest Dreddguy Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 That is good news. I wasn't expecting Tesco to update to Lolipop so I have a Raspberry Pi IQAudiO PiDac+ on order. I will control it with my Hudl only without a cable attached.
Guest Malcolm.smith Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 The problem with using a Pi is that when it hangs or fails for some reason you need to connect a display to it. I tried to use an Android PC stick controlled from my Phone (using Spotify connect) but sometimes it didn't start and the Nexus phone couldn't find it. Then I had to connect a TV to find out what had happened. That's why I committed a cheap tablet to the role of supplying a source to my amp. (Cheap 'cause I used a load of our Tesco vouchers and it cost me £7!)My phone will still be used to control it if I am too lazy to walk over to the tablet mounted on the wall.

I was hoping to run this by inserting it into an OTG cable and then in the Hudl 2 ? Edited September 30, 2015 by theadmans
Guest Malcolm.smith Posted September 30, 2015 Report Posted September 30, 2015 I used the powered USB hub because I was concerned about battery drain from the Hudl. I have just connected the HRT DAC straight into the OTG cable and it does work without the powered hub. So, the answer seems to be that DACs will work on the Hudl without additional power. Battery drain will probably depend upon the power usage of the DAC
Guest Dreddguy Posted October 1, 2015 Report Posted October 1, 2015 Thanks for the input on the Pi Malcolm.smith. It's all on order now so too late to cancel. I'm looking forward to putting it all together and have heard some very positive words about the RPi IQAudio PiDac+ The Art of Sound forum seems especially keen on it. With a few members comparing it very favourably with their high end esoteric turntables. So for me it has to worth a punt for an outlay of less than £100
Guest DaveGriff Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Woo Hoo, downloading the update as I type. Finally :-)
Guest DaveGriff Posted October 3, 2015 Report Posted October 3, 2015 Premature joy. The Fiio isn't recognised with at all with Lollipop, haven't bothered with the Naim as it'll be the same story, totally f**ing usless.
Guest Dreddguy Posted October 5, 2015 Report Posted October 5, 2015 I installed Lollipop and could not get USB audio to work. I contacted Tesco tech support who informed me that this feature is not supported. Which conflicts with Malcolm Smiths experience. I will try a powered hub but I think as my DAC worked just fine on Kitkat with USB Audio Player Pro it's unlikely to work on Lollipop.
Guest popoyaya Posted October 5, 2015 Report Posted October 5, 2015 A few people have commented that USB OTG seems to be disabled on Lollipop. Would that have anything to do with it?

OK that is interesting - I have been prevaricating about installing Lollipop but if there is no USB Audio I will not bother. I like the way my Hudl works at the moment and I have put a lot of work in to setting it up just so - so don't fancy doing a Factory reset that some folks seem to think is required after the Lollipop upgrade.Think I will buy a separate Audio DAP like the Fiio X3 for when I want sounds on the go. £160 but at least it will more elegant than a Hudl, USB DAC and possibly a powered hub to carry around!
