liquid z5(z150) recovery problems

i got i phone from i friend and having a realy hard time booting into recovery mode..,somehow he forget his locking patern (or the phone just freak out and doesnt recognize)

and canot do a soft reset!!i was looking for a way to make a hard reset and let me tell you..there a lots of options to go with but none of them work!! i have a feling volume butons dont work!!every time i try recovery boot phone just starts and get to patern and im not able to unlock the damn phone!! anyone have a phone and know for sure how to boot into recovery....,and BTW im thinking my friend was trying to root it or something but he is not teling me!! any ideas guysß?
