Guest esc4p3 Posted January 23, 2015 Report Posted January 23, 2015 Hi all One of the experiments I wanted to get into with my HUDL2 was using Limelight to stream games from Steam on my main PC. I only found one other HUDL2 topic on the subject, but thought I might post a bit more detail in case it helps anyone else. Does it work? Yes. I use a wired Xbox 360 controller and OTG cable, and a micro HDMI cable to link to the telly. I fire up the Limelight app and once you 'pair' it with Steam, it picks up all my Steam games and away you go. Is it perfect? No. This technology relies on fast network speed. My main router is connected via Ethernet/powerline to a router-repeater downstairs and the HUDL2 is connected to it via Wireless-N. So the best I could hope for in my setup. Playing Assassins Creed Unity or GRID Autosport downstairs does work, but is just too laggy. Playing less graphical games like Trine 2 or Spelunky work rather well and are perfectly playable. I have to use the lowest quality setting (720p and lowest bitrate) but it looks pretty good if a bit blocky at times. USB Ethernet....I'd not heard of this until I read the other thread, but apparently the adaptor didn't work with the HUDL2. Does anyone know of a USB-Ethernet adaptor that does work with the HUDL2, and also if it did work, is there such a thing as a dual OTG connector....because I need to connect the Xbox 360 controller via the same port. It is seeming a bit unlikely ;) In any event, doing this with the HUDL2 is a darned site cheaper than buying an Nvidia Shield Tablet, and with my network bandwidth, I'm not sure I would have been any better off.
Guest 4L0M Posted January 23, 2015 Report Posted January 23, 2015 (edited) Wow. That's great. I'm definitely going to try this. Have you tried it whilst outputting over the Hudl2 HDMI? I was going to build a new pc for my bedroom to try steam streaming from my gaming rig in my front room, but I will give this a go. I had a modicum of success trying to get PS4 remote play working on hudl2 last night, but I can't get it past the code to PS4 authentication. I did enjoy playing psx games on my hudl2 last night using FPse, the ones I tried ran surprisingly well.... I have an otg cable coming tomorrow, so hopefully I can use it to sync my PS4 or PS3 controller to the Hudl2 and then use Bluetooth to play FPse wireless with a proper controller. EDIT : I see limelight is nvidia only, that's annoying, I have 2 overclocked r9 290 in crossfire......... Back to the drawing board...... Edited January 23, 2015 by 4L0M
Guest 4L0M Posted January 31, 2015 Report Posted January 31, 2015 So, I just tried this app called kinoconsole which is free on playstore. I successfully connected to my gaming pc which is downstairs in front room and I'm lying in bed upstairs with hudl2 and a 360 wired pad via otg cable. I could successfully launch ProjectCARS, Dying Light and Advanced Warfare via Steam through the Hudl2 (all of which are running in 4k resolution with all graphics options pretty much maxxed) and they stream to the Hudl2 OK, but there is currently too much input lag ( although the 360 pad works perfectly through the Hudl2 to control the pc gaming). The picture looks OK, pretty good even, but I can't hear any audio. I tried dropping the in-game resolution to 720p, but unfortunately it's still too laggy for smooth game play and still no audio through the Hudl2. Anyone know any other way to achieve non laggy Steam streaming over Android?
Guest 4L0M Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 (edited) Further testing to my goal of streaming my gaming pc to my Hudl2 so i can play pc games lying in bed, I have just tried using an app called Kainy, and the results appear pretty good so far. Occasional stutters, but audio is perfect. Futher testing will be required as I'm unable to get some games like modded Skyrim and modded New Vegas to work yet, but it's early days. Some stuff I have got working so far : Dying Light streamed to Hudl2 at 1920x1080 Advanced Warfare running in 2560x1440p streamed to Hudl2. Dragon Age Inquisition running at 2560x1440p streamed to Hudl2. Resident Evil HD remake 1920x1080 streamed to Hudl2. All screenshots above grabbed from HUDL2. Edited February 12, 2015 by 4L0M
Guest 4L0M Posted February 12, 2015 Report Posted February 12, 2015 (edited) Here are 2 more tested and working : Fifa 15 ( with Moddingway Mod ) streamed to Hudl2 @ 1080p Sniper Elite V3 streamed to HUDL2 @ 1080p Again, both screenshots are taken directly from Hudl2 with no editing. I would also like to point out that i'm using xbox360 controller over OTG for controls and the images of the mice on-screen when streaming to the Kainy app can be toggled on or off in-game. Guest esc4p3 Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 Nice, thanks for this. Will definitely give Kainy a go. Is the paid-for version worth a go, or have you only tried the free (ad supported) version.
Guest 4L0M Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 (edited) Hi esc4p3, I purchased the paid version of Kainy. The pc server version is $4.99 and the ad-free android app was about £2. I have actually just had some really good success with yet ANOTHER streaming android app. The best yet actually. Splashtop GamePad THD which is currently £6.24 on Play Store. No noticeable lag at all, perfect audio. I just need to sort out a borderless window mod for a few games and this will be perfect. Video of me streaming Dying Light on Hudl2 Streamed from PC via Splashtop GamePad THD app : http://youtu.be/o86ZyCSP7Yk ( Can't embed the Video for some reason, you will have to click the link ) The game runs in PERFECT HD on the HUDL2, the pixellation you see is caused by the codec the Tablet uses to screen record. There is No audio on the Video as the screen record doesn't capture it, but it works on the tablet PERFECTLY ! Edited February 13, 2015 by 4L0M
Guest 4L0M Posted February 13, 2015 Report Posted February 13, 2015 Here is Skyrim with about 200+ mods streamed to Hudl2 from PC via Splashtop GamePad THD : http://youtu.be/eWhTW17CFmY Again, as the video above, The audio is not recorded, but works flawlessly on Hudl2 and the pixellation is caused by the codec used to screen grab the clip.
Guest 4L0M Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 OK, after more testing, I have got Skyrim to stream to Hudl2 tablet perfectly ! No lag, perfect audio and Full screen using Splashtop GamePad THD app from playstore. It's not only used for gaming, you can control your PC /Laptop/ netbook from your Hudl2 touchscreen and do whatever you want. Screenshot taken straight from Hudl2 with no editing : Video of Skyrim running fullscreen on Hudl2 tablet ( Youtube ) : http://youtu.be/U4RjKdOq_tk
Guest 4L0M Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 Dragon Age Inquisition streamed from PC to Hudl2 using Splashtop GamePad THD app from Playstore : YouTube clip of Dragon Age Inquisition played on Hudl2 : http://youtu.be/CmkYBoofUCA
Guest 4L0M Posted February 15, 2015 Report Posted February 15, 2015 FIFA 15 streamed from PC to Hudl2 via Splashtop GamePad THD app from playstore : YouTube clip of FIFA 15 on Hudl2 : http://youtu.be/31ZK_73sNJI
Guest 4L0M Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 (edited) Minecraft on Hudl2 Project Cars running on Hudl 2. Basically, my conclusion. Splashtop GamePad THD is the best streaming app I have tried. Games on the pc HAVE to be running in windowed mode to be able to be seen on Hudl 2. Unfortunately this means sli / crossfire will not work as they do not support windowed mode ( Nvidia may, I can't remember, AMD definitely doesn't). Input lag is generally more than acceptable. I use xbox360 pad over otg cable to control games, works perfectly. Games look GORGEOUS on Hudl 2 screen. Audio is perfect, no stuttering at all. If I can think of anything else helpful I will post it. Not that anyone but 2 of us care about this thread anyway, lol. Edited March 22, 2015 by 4L0M
Guest ViPaSoft Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 "Not that anyone but 2 of us care about this thread anyway, lol." I care. Just waiting for my Hudl 2. Looks interesting, very interesting even. Just wish these tablets had an option to use a gamepad and charge at the same time. Sometimes I wish they still had propriety PSU's as well as a Micro USB port.
Guest ViPaSoft Posted March 22, 2015 Report Posted March 22, 2015 By the way, have you tried OnLive. Wondered how good/bad that was.
Guest esc4p3 Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 thanks for the udpate 4LOM. Can I just check please, when I search Splashtop in the Play Store on the HUDL2, I get Splashtop Remote Desktop and Splashtop 2 Remote Desktop....but not "Splashtop GamePad THD". Are these all the same thing? Certainly I'm keen to try anything to reduce the lag, as I said before less graphics intensive games work ok with Limelight, but I can't get GRID Autosport to work acceptably.
Guest esc4p3 Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 By the way, have you tried OnLive. Wondered how good/bad that was. Personally, no.
Guest 4L0M Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Vipasoft I haven't tried onlive. I looked at their game collection, and most of it looks rubbish to be honest. If I read it correctly, you can only play steam games, so all games on Origin etc are out of the window and they look slightly more expensive than just buying them directly through steam anyway. You can actually add the Origin client to Steam library via third party games, you can actually play all of your origin games via Steams own in-house streaming between pc's. They work perfectly. Whether you could trick onlive with this method though I don't know. And esc4p3. This is the Android app I'm using, confusingly, they have changed the name slightly since I purchased it : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.splashtop.remote.pad.thd&hl=en_GB&referrer=utm_source%3Dgoogle%26utm_medium%3Dorganic%26utm_term%3Dgoogle+play+splash+top+game+pad+thd&pcampaignid=APPU_1_dZkRVZGRNbLY7AaV0IGQDw
Guest ViPaSoft Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Thanks 4L0M, I only used onlive on my Laptop which didn't have a great GPU and I could play, (minimal subs), my steam games at no extra cost it. Might give that Splashtop Remote a go. I did try it about a year ago and it didn't work too well then. One question, the link you gave is for the THD version. I've tried 3 THD games, (Shadowgun THD, Arma Tactics THD and Soulcraft THD), and none of them would install, are you sure your using the THD version on a Hudl2?
Guest 4L0M Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 (edited) I have never tried a "THD" game. I'm definitely using the app that I linked to. Basically, you download the app in the link I provided onto your Android device. You download splash top desktop server from their website for free. You run splashtop desktop server on your pc. It gives you a pass code. You start splashtop app on your Android device. It will search for a pc on same network. When it finds your pc, you type in pass code to connect. After connection your Hudl 2 will show your pc desktop exactly as it looks on your monitor. You can even use Hudl 2 touchscreen to move your mouse pointer. You then start up any full game on your pc, like Skyrim for example. It will then be shown on your hudl2 screen. That's the basic gist of it. You HAVE to run your game in windowed mode ( practically all games support this in gfx options). You ideally want to run them in "borderless window mode". There is a free third party app you can download that supports loads of games to achieve this. There is a mod on Skyrim nexus that allows borderless window mode easily. All screenshot and video in this thread were taken directly from my Hudl 2 using the app in the link I provided. Bear in my mind I have a very very fast gaming pc, so your mileage may vary EDIT : my pc specs I7 [email protected] watercooled 16gb 2100mhz ram Asus Maximus Hero VII mobo 2 x Asus DCU II 4gb r9 290 in crossfire Corsair 1000w rm1000 psu 3 x Samsung 256gb ssd 2 x Samsung 1 TB storage I think it is more dependant on your network speed more than anything else though. Guest ViPaSoft Posted March 24, 2015 Report Posted March 24, 2015 Thanks, that was informative. Perhaps THD in this instance is different to THD in others as they usually require an Nvidia Tegra chip. Thanks again. Should work on my PC, its and Alienware with GTX 970 and i5 processor.
Guest 4L0M Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) So, after abysmal driver support from AMD for my 290's in crossfire, I took the plunge and bought 2 MSI 970gtx in SLI. I downloaded the limelight app that was mentioned in the first post and did some testing ( very basic testing so far). First thing, the Limelight app is now called Moonlight. Second, you DO NOT need to run your games in windowed mode for the games to work correctly this is a massively handy convenience. Early days but it looks very promising. GTA V running at ultra settings, 2560 x 1440p dsr streamed to Hudl 2. Screenshot taken unedited from Hudl 2. Project Cars 2560 x 1440p Ultra dsr screenshot taken straight from Hudl 2.
