Guest r00tmydevices Posted January 31, 2015 Report Posted January 31, 2015 I can also concur with others here, charging bug is not fixed, although I did install the Dolby equaliser apk the other day but have charged successfully a couple of times since then, but not today when plugged in at 12%. I may try a factory reset later today as don't have much on my Hudl and see what happens. Does factory reset delete all settings, app data plus root?
Guest Mark_He Posted January 31, 2015 Report Posted January 31, 2015 I've actively been trying to get the charging bug to happen since I updated, by not turning off etc. Pre-update I'd only ever had it once, but then I tend to power my Hudl off and plug it in later. Anyway, I've "successfully" managed to reproduce it, as an overnight charge from about 33% on the tesco-supplied charger didn't shift the dial. Plugging it into my good-quality other charger caused it to start charging immediately. So the bug is still there, but highly intermittent for me.
Guest pudpoh Posted January 31, 2015 Report Posted January 31, 2015 Factory reset will only delete all your apps and user data. I don't think you will lose root as that is to do with the system partition which it doesn't touch.

Will bare that in mind should I ever run into problems and consider trying a factory reset to resolve things. Must purchase Titanium Backup and regularly save a backup so I don't spend hours after a factory reset etc, trying to get everything back to how it was.

You could try this: Go to play store and download Safe Charge by Todor Kolev/ Set it running and make sure nothing blocks its services running. This app stops the tablet from falling into sleep of death and enables a charge to reach the battery.
Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 I'm doing just that as I type this. Let my h2 run the battery right down to 1% then switch itself off. Then plugged it into the mains charger. Really do hope that fixes the problem I'm experiencing of the battery running down from 100% so rapidly!

Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Always the screen, yesterday screen was showing it as using 87%! That's in a battery app I installed, not the main h2 settings > battery. I have it set at very low brightness and auto switched on.

Guest Thomas49 Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 My 2p worth! Bugs that I have observed before and after the update still exist including but not limited to: WiFi not finding network needing reboot re-initialize Wrong time bug - need soft reset to correct My Tesco Launcher loses settings and returns to default - corrected by using different launcher Battery Charging, does not charge when plugged in and in use, always get insufficient power to charge message Battery, average to ok before and after. New Bugs Has rebooted a couple of times without command I have not tried the HDMI port yet, or inserted an SD card into it yet so cannot confirm if there are bugs in this area. My unit is graphite/black in colour and bought in November 2014, in addition I have returned one unit for the WiFi issue and reported the My Launcher Bug to Tesco so they know about these issues, if they admit to them now is another thing!
Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 Maybe it's fitted with a particularly inefficient display? Rooted a family members h2 this afternoon. Looked in settings > battery and the display was showing as using 93% of battery. It was set very low and auto switched on.
Guest seanspotatobusiness Posted February 3, 2015 Report Posted February 3, 2015 (edited) Battery Charging, does not charge when plugged in and in use, always get insufficient power to charge message What charger and cable are you using? You don't have to use the supplied cable and charger but you do need to use a sufficiently powerful charger and a cable of either thick gauge or short length. I bought some 2 m cables to charge the Hudl whilst using it but the wires inside drop too much voltage and therefore can't supply sufficient current to charge the tablet during use. My new 2 m PortaPow 20 AWG gauge cable can. It cost £5.50 on EBay. 24 AWG cables might be sufficient though (most cheap ones are 28 AWG). Rooted a family members h2 this afternoon. No, i mean maybe the Hudl 2 in general is fitted with an inefficient display as part of cost-cutting. It's the same with mine too. Edited February 4, 2015 by seanspotatobusiness

Also is there a 3m one available? Save me buying the wrong one then finding it's not fit for purpose. Thanks.

Various chargers provide the same result - all about the 2A -2.1A range. Would not expect a noticeable drop across a 2m cable, the unit must well fussy!

Thanks. eBay search 'PortaPow cable' (Their website is unnuterably confusing and ill-conceived, but you can buy from that as well) I bought one a while back, and was so impressed I've now got them in each room in the house. They really do make a difference. 3m is still stretching it a bit for sending x Amps up a skinny cable, but the 20awg thickness cable does help. Edited February 4, 2015 by state-it
Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 A quick search and found eBay item: 321159008835 Is that the same as ones you've been using and been happy with? Thanks.
Guest DavidB633 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Hello, I have a post - SD card removed unexpectedly - and in summary, tried with two separate SanDisk cards (32GB) and they are not 'seen' after 3 or more hours in sleep mode. However, a Moto *Gb card and a Samsung 32GB card work fine. Looks like there might be a problem with 'sleep' mode and SanDisk SD cards, either generally or on my Hudl2. If you remove the Sandisk card and re-insert, or power down and power up the Hudl2, the SanDisk card is seen again but only for a few hours. Cheers. david.
Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Are you always powering down before you insert/remove microSD cards? Heard you can experience problems if trying to either sometimes whilst a device is powered up.

Save me buying the wrong one then finding it's not fit for purpose. Thanks. First a caveat that for the cable I'm using I've seen negative reviews about the longevity of the cable. That said, we have great consumer rights in the UK so if it breaks in less than a year, send it back. I can't find the exact cable that I have on eBay any more. Instead there's only this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PortaPow-High-Speed-Fast-Charge-200cm-20AWG-Micro-USB-Cable-for-Blackberry-etc-/321159008835 which is a charge-only cable (the data pins are shorted so you can't use it to transfer data). The 3 m version is out-of-stock at Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/PortaPow-Specialised-20AWG-Charge-Block/dp/B00T0DW3LC/ref=sr_1_83?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1423052297&sr=1-83&keywords=PortaPow There are other brands of low gauge cable - they're usually 24 AWG so maybe 20 AWG is overkill but I don't really know. When they say 24/28 AWG, they mean the data lines are 28 AWG which is perfectly fine since they're not carrying high current. Presumably the data lines in my 20 AWG cable are 28 AWG but it doesn't matter. I had a 2 m Belkin cable which lasted me about two and a half years but I imagine it was 28 AWG (I've never owned such a high-draw microUSB device before so it didn't matter).
Guest r00tmydevices Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Had I not first read on here any mention about which cables work well for charging, I'm sure I would have made the same mistake others have in purchasing one or more cheap 'n' cheerful ones before being disappointed then shelling out for a more expensive one. As the saying goes...buy right buy only once! A longer charging only cable is my main need right now. The supplied cable is too short to do anything with. Can the PortaPow cables supply enough juice to charge the h2 whilst it's in use or is that not possible due to limitations of the h2 itself? Thanks.
Guest Mark_He Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 On cables/chargers, there was a fairly comprehensive post on xda some time ago by sometime who tested a whole slew of different chargers. His conclusion was that a surplus blackberry playbook charger was easily the best. This makes sense, as even though blackberry lost the OS war, they were always damn good at hardware. It comes with a 2m integral cake, and mine has been rock-solid - I've only ever had charging failures when using the Tesco charger. Available all over the place, but here's an Amazon link http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004XKG7NM/ref=pe_385721_37038051_TE_3p_dp_1
Guest Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 (edited) The hudl2 is quite demanding when it comes to recharging and surprisingly, the newer hudl2 supplied charger (compared with the old hudl charger) pumps out a good rate as can bee seen bellow (5.5v @ 1.5-1.7A even though it's output is rated at [email protected]) - these pictures were taken when charging a hudl2 @60% battery level. The older original hudl charger is only recorded as supplying just under 5v, but the same current levels. Guest oldscot Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Hi all, As my first post I thought I'd weigh in with my 2p worth on the charger/charging issue. Had my h2 since Nov with none of the problems that others seem to experience. Charges Ok (or about as well, I gather, as any h2 does) no time problems, no random reboots etc. Battery life is poor but that seems to be par for the course. 3 & a half hours browsing will drain it to 10-15% and it takes about three hours to charge. Touch is not overly sensitive but no bad enough to be a problem. Charger notes: Bought a Belkin charger rated at 2.1A to use downstairs - will not charge at all (in fact I think the charger shuts down after a while as it is quite cold after a couple of hours). Tried that one with its own and the original tesco leads. It WILL charge very very slowly if the hudl is turned off. Tesco original charger works ok, about three and a half hours to charge from empty (well, 8%). My wifes Galaxy Note charger (2.1A) - excellent. Faster charge. Recently bought a Tesco own brand Hudl Charger which is not the same model as supplied with the Hudle (a nicer ruberised case) (on offer for 8 ukp) which is quite good - comes with a short but thick cable and charges (subjectively) slightly faster than the original charger. As for applying the January update, I'm very inclined to delay indefinately given that I don't have the problems that it purports to fix and I don't want the problems it is reported to cause (but I would like to be able to move apps to the sd card!). oldscot.

Mine are older black-ended ones, they didn't have the red ends when I bought mine. They are for charging only, as opposed to syncing as well, BTW.
Guest David441 Posted February 4, 2015 Report Posted February 4, 2015 Purchased my Hudl2 10 October last year. It's not rooted and everything installed is standard and unmodified. GMail and a few genuine Apps from the Google Play Store are used. Until the January update I'd not experienced any of the issues encountered by others. It had performed perfectly in every way, the battery life had been particularly good. Since the update it has been reluctant to turn on and slow to boot thereafter. Other issues are listed below but in short the January update has ruined my unit. Had it behaved like this from new it would have gone straight back. I'm seeing the time & date issue on every boot, shows January 01, 00.00 until it updates from the web, it then continues with the correct time and date. If update date & time from web is set to off the displayed date and time continues from January 01, 00.00. Touch screen has become insensitive, I've always used the Tesco stylus so not a finger issue. Battery appears to charge OK, taking the same time to fully charge as I'd seen previously but the battery status graph is inaccurate time wise reporting significantly more or less time on battery than has actually elapsed. I have seen one occurrence of the unit fully discharging over a period of 2 days whilst turned off - definitely not left in stand-by. This never happened prior to the update, battery life was excellent. Not Happy!!!
