Guest sam2380 Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Is there any way to use the phone as a proxy? for example you connect to gprs, and you can use msn messenger on your computer through the usb?? good way to get around firewalls :)
Guest Bazz Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Please search. You may wish to post in the Beginners section if you haven't been here for long. The modem driver on the CD doesn't work, but a new one has been released (see a post on this board), but this only works for updated phones. The UK update is due out on Monday.
Guest sam2380 Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 uh? I don't want to use IT as a MODEM to call an ISP. I WANT TO USE THE GPRS as the internet connection? Does that make sense to you?
Guest Firaas Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 ... Using the SPV as a modem will allow you to use the GPRS connection. As Bazz said, please search :)
Guest sam2380 Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 i did search, So you are telling me by installing the modem inf, it willc ome up on my computer as modem. OK, its a modem, can it dial itself? Some clarification would be good.
Guest Firaas Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 The initialisation string for the modem is on this forum. You need to have an Update (either DK or UK) for the SPV to be able to work as a modem over USB. The instructions once you've installed the modem are the same as for IR.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 I think he means use the GPRS connection on the phone to act as your inet connection on your PC, not using the SPV as a modem. If so this is possible, although i can't remember the specifics...again, a forum search probably will throw up setup procedures.
Guest Rob.P Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Basically a reverse of the "Pass Thru" option for the SPV. Not something I'd wanna broadcast though as IT Admins will wanna ban employees from connecting their SPV's to the computers. Soon as you circumvent the firewall you could be opening up your corporate LAN to god knows what. Not that I'm having a go or anything, just thinking of the wider implications, don't won't someone cutting off the hands of all SPV users who want to connect their phones at work.
Guest fraser Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Rob.P raises an excelent point. My company would go balistic if you had an alternate back-door into the network running, and rightfully so. Running a secure network is hard enough without having to worry about client side connections. One of the reasons p2p is frowned apon is because it represents a security issue, as you create an event channel from your machine that allows incomming messages that bypass the offical firewall. Even the VPN stuff we use activates a firewall that blocks all IPs other than ones that come through the tunnel. They are a bit parnoid, you'd understand if I was to say who they were! ;-)
