Guest George Styles Posted April 30, 2015 Report Posted April 30, 2015 A kernel source allows you to build a custom kernel, provided the kernel config is included, or a kernel script. While that is true, what you cannot do is actually run it on the device, since it has a signed bootloader (unless im mistaken). I think its called Tivoisation or something, since Tivo were the first to pull this dirty trick. I believe all Android devices get kernel source (its a breach of © to no do so because GPL), so this is nothing special, and because of the above, it doesnt actually allow us to do anything at all :( If only we could unlock the bootloader... id be far more inclined to have a play with my 130 quid tablet than my 400+ phone g

At least i know :) Thanks J

I don't own this device, I do own several Intel devices though.

Guest vampirefo Posted May 20, 2015 Report Posted May 20, 2015 So why does the Hudl 2 not boot anything else accept the stock recovery? Most likely the repackage is done wrong, If I had the tablet I would have put more time in unpacking and repacking the boot.img, I don't own it and won't put in the time and effort to find out what needs to be done to correctly unpack and repack boot.img.
Guest Daniel_Twigg Posted May 31, 2015 Report Posted May 31, 2015 Is it safe to try and do so myself? For example, if I take a nandroid backup or manually backup the current kernel..

Is it possible for me to backup and restore current boot.img so I can test unpack and repack the boot.img? I successfully compiled my own kernel once for my Galaxy Note 3 and it needed a custom unpack/repack offset or something. Obviously the Samsung devices get a lot more investment into hacking than a cheap Hudl but any info you can spare me would be a godsend.

Have you looked at the hudl2 kernel source? I just got dell to release kernel source for my venue 8 3830, took them over a year to release it, I run my own custom kernel now.Anyway good luck.
Guest vampirefo Posted August 15, 2015 Report Posted August 15, 2015 I downloaded hudl2 kernel source, The source is OK, except Tesco didn't include their priority drivers, which they are required to. The source is still usable for making custom modules and such, perhaps if you disable Tesco priority drivers aka modules from config, and not try to build them, just use the ones in stock ramdisk you should be able to build a kernel with this source.
