cant start hudl2 without updating

i picked up a refurb hudl 2 today, and want to root it, but I cant seem to get to the start screen without updating the software. I think if I do I wont be able to root it for a while until someone figures that out but is there a way to get past this update screen without updating? or am I just going to have to update?
