Guess what just arrived in the MoDaCo office today? An Elephone P8000, the £100 powerhouse courtesy of Focal Price. The device itself is as surprising as it is predictable, sticking largely to the Chinese import device formula but throwing in a few surprises. Cheap? Monster specs (with a questionable battery size)? Strangely named? Dodgy initial software build? Check. Surprisingly solid build with a metal edge, quick delivery and a pledge of ROM updates and kernel source? Working fingerprint sensor? Surprisingly, yes!

I seem to have lucked into an early delivery by ordering the white model, which is fortunate!

A quick look at the specs...

  • MTK6753 octa-core 1.3GHz CPU
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16GB storage with microSD expansion
  • Dual SIM card dual standby
  • 2G: GSM850/900/1800MHz
  • 3G: WCDMA1900/2100MHz
  • 4G: FDD-LTE800/1800/2600MHz
  • Android 5.1
  • Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 2.4GHz
  • 5.5" 1920x1080 screen
  • 13 Megapixel rear camera, 5 Megapixel front camera
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • 4000mAh (rated), 4165mAh (typical) battery
  • 155.2 x 77.6 x 9.2 mm
  • 203 g

As a battery monster, it's the 4000mAh (rated) battery that probably interests me the most, so watch this space to see if it fares as well as you might expect. Much is down to the software build of course.

Post any questions about the device below and i'll do my best to answer... or head on over to the new Elephone forum!

The P8000 can be purchased from GearBest.

Looks like a real bargain, would love to see some decent camera samples. I'm about to finally retire my Galaxy Note and this could be a real contender if the camera is decent enough.

What's the build quality like Paul?

How does it feel in the hand?

Are the contact edges sharp or rounded?

How snappy is it during use, does it lag much?

Finally, are you planning a good old fashioned MoDaCo ROM for it?

The camera app is a bit buggy atm. I'll take some samples though!

Build quality seems good, it feels substantial and we'll made with no uncomfortable edges.

It's snappy, quite warm in use so far, no MCR planned I'm afraid!

Obvious question, how does it compare to the similarly sized and priced Smart Ultra 6, if you had to live with one of them which would it be?

I'd buy the Su6 to be honest, no question!
